It was only a matter of time. After all, when you’ve already been front row and tactile at major award shows, including the Oscars, and sporting events, what’s a red carpet, right? The only question was… which red carpet.

Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner had the opportunity at the start of the week at the Met Gala to make their red carpet debut. He decided instead to stay in and watch the basketball game. Instead, it happened last night in Rome at the David Di Donatello Awards, known as the Italian Oscars, where Timmy was presented with an honorary David for Cinematic Excellence.

Timmy and Kylie are both extremely online people. Timmy might not post a lot but he’s aware of the trends and the memes, he’s checking, he knows what people are saying, they both know what people are saying. So there had to have been some strategy here, a joint decision on the time and the place. I don’t hate it – choosing this event in particular where his work was the reason for his attendance and not the fashion show that is the Met Gala, there’s a justification beyond “we’re here to show out”.

It wasn’t just Kylie who was with Timothée on the trip, he had family there too. His dad is the one in the light shirt and grey hair seated in the row behind Kylie, filming Timmy on stage.

This moment, I think, illustrates one of the most frustrating things about Timmy and Kylie for those who are haters of this relationship. Most of the KarJenner boyfriends/husbands look like hostages when they’re out with them. Since they started dating, though, Timmy has never looked like a hostage. In fact, everything about the body language suggests that he very much wants to be there, that this is not a case of him being dragged into the situation but fully willing to participate. There is nothing Affleck about Timmy’s energy.

As for this latest honour in Italy, Timothée credited an Italian for his achievement: Luca Guadagnino.

“I started out as a 20-year-old kid from New York who was having a hard time breaking out in the American film industry,” Chalamet said. “My career happened overnight thanks to Luca Guadagnino and the chance he took on me playing in an Italian movie.”

The movie, of course, is Call Me By Your Name in which he spoke Italian, French, and English. He spent several months in Italy in preparation for the film and it obviously left a lasting impression:

“I have no familial bloodline that runs through Italy. I’m not related to anyone here, but I feel a deep connection to the cinema community here,” he added. “If I hadn’t pursued my dream of acting, I probably would have broken Francesco Totti’s scoring record,” Chalamet continued, referring to the former captain of AS Roma soccer club, of which he is an ardent fan.

As for the fashion, Kylie is wearing Schiaparelli. It’s black, it’s body-con, well within her wheelhouse and, frankly, as beautiful as the dress may be, it blends into so many of her other looks. Timmy, meanwhile, is in Tom Ford by Haider Ackermann. Black velvet, with turned up lapels, an open shirt, and the tease of a wife pleaser underneath to match the flower. A small detail that isn’t accidental. He does not play when it comes to hints and accents.
