We The People
A Tribe Called Quest ended their performance at the 2017 Grammy Awards with Q-Tip yelling, “RESIST! RESIST! RESIST!” So, it was the most 2017 performance of the night. ATCQ was joined by Busta Rhymes and Best New Artist nominee Anderson .Paak.
ATCQ’s classic jam Award Tour kicked off the performance and I’ve determined that it will always make me happy when I hear it. “Movin Backwards” and “Can I Kick It?” were also featured but the best part of the performance, hands down, was Busta Rhymes’ interlude before We The People from Tribe’s latest album We Got it From Here… Thank You 4 Your Service.
“I want to thank President Agent Orange for your unsuccessful attempt at the Muslim Ban.”
Busta Rhymes has no chill and I am here for it. President Agent Orange is the best Trump nickname I have ever heard and I am using it from now on.
Aside from this overt Trump call out and a couple jokes or quotes here and there, the Grammys were largely free of politics. I know some people don’t want to hear musicians talk politics but I’m really into artists using their influence to speak out for causes they are passionate about. I would have loved to hear what Q-Tip (who looked great) would have said if We Got it From Here… Thank You 4 Your Service—which wasn’t eligible for this year’s show—had won.
When I wrote about Tribe’s new album last year, I noted that while a lot of the themes are painfully relevant, they did record it before Trump got elected. Now, I’m hoping Tribe goes back into the studio and delivers some material directed right at President Agent Orange, featuring Busta Rhymes. He’ll love that.
