It was supposed to be one of those nights. On the West Coast, Angelina Jolie was supposed to be lighting up Hollywood at the Unbroken premiere, with Brad Pitt’s hand on her ass, surrounded by their children – the ultimate celebrity family portrait – while on the East Coast, Jennifer Aniston was at yet another Cake screening in New York, encouraged by three recent Best Actress nominations, and continue to push for the big one: Oscar. Full Story

Here’s Amy Adams today on Good Morning America promoting Big Eyes. Every year, around this time, Amy Adams is out there promoting her good work. With Amy Adams, it’s consistently good work. Like Julianne Moore for so long, so underappreciated. It’s finally Julianne’s time now. Full Story

The Critics’ Choice nominations have just been announced. Unbroken in…Foxcatcher out. Angelina Jolie is on the list for Best Directors, Bennett Miller isn’t, and nothing for Steve Carell. Instead they went with Ralph Fiennes in Grand Budapest Hotel and David Oyelowo in Selma. I wonder if it’s because Carell can be a weird interview. Full Story

The Hollywood Reporter has posted their Director Roundtable video. It’s 2 weeks to Christmas. It’s a Friday afternoon. So, you know, if you have time to f-ck around before you hit the weekend, this is worth your time. Mike Leigh, Angelina Jolie, Richard Linklater, Bennett Miller, Christopher Nolan, and Morten Tyldum are gathered around the table talking about their work and their inspiration. Full Story

Great week for Jake Gyllenhaal. As already mentioned, lots, he was nominated for a SAG award and for a Golden Globe for his performance in Nightcrawler. His sister, Maggie, was also nominated for both (Best Actress Miniseries, The Honourable Woman). And Ruth Wilson, his Broadway co-star in Constellations, was nominated for The Affair. Full Story

Reese Witherspoon was nominated for a SAG award yesterday. She was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award today. There was never any doubt, was there? She’s good in Wild. And she’s connected in Hollywood. Jim Toth, her husband, is a major player at CAA. In that Jennifer Aniston article I posted earlier about her big victory over Brange the last two days, I wondered about a conspiracy theory. Full Story

This was not the way the week was expected to go for Angelina Jolie. No Golden Globes. And she gets implicated in the Sony email leak. AND Jennifer Aniston gets a SAG nomination and an invitation to the Beverly Hilton by the HFPA. It’s rare. Because the way the Jolie plays it, things usually go her way. Full Story

SAG nomination yesterday, Golden Globe nomination today – Jake Gyllenhaal’s chances at an Oscar nomination are looking better and better. Bradley Cooper’s are not. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has given us a lot of WTF moments over the years. I’m not sure if the Brange and Unbroken shutout qualifies as a standard HFPA WTF the way The Tourist did, or, you know, Pia Zadora. Full Story

Check out Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones at the premiere of The Theory Of Everything in London last night, an early celebration for their double SAG nominations this morning. Triple, actually, because the film was also nominated for Best Ensemble. Have you seen it? SEE IT. I love this movie. It was my favourite at TIFF. Full Story

Oh but the timing of this… She timed it, obviously, with the upcoming release of Unbroken. This is PEOPLE’s year in review Best of 2014 issue. They’re hoping it’s big numbers in circulation. Perhaps the last issue of the magazine that people will pick up before the holiday break. Full Story

We’ve been speculating for weeks about that fifth Best Actor spot, assuming that Michael Keaton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Eddie Redmayne, and Steve Carell would be in for four. And we’ve seen Jake Gyllenhaal surging. Well, he’s almost there. The Screen Actors have sent him an invitation. Full Story

Did Jennifer Aniston stay up late last night, reading and re-reading every email leaked in the Sony hack, especially the parts where Scott Rudin sh-ts on Angelina Jolie? Did it get even better when she woke up this morning – or maybe she didn’t sleep at all – to learn that…holy sh-t, she’s been nominated for a SAG? She did it. Full Story

Dear Gossips,

The Boston Society of Film Critics and the LA Film Critics Association both named Boyhood the best film of 2014 yesterday. So Boyhood and director Richard Linklater are well on their way to Oscar nominations. But, as Ritchie wrote in his email to me last night, it remains to be seen whether Boyhood ends up being The Hurt Locker or The Social Network. That said, what’s the 2014 version of The King’s Speech, the film that took down The Social Network? Well, The King’s Speech was a Harvey Weinstein-led campaign. This year, Harvey is repping The Imitation Game.

In the acting categories, JK Simmons continues building momentum and Patricia Arquette too, although LA totally ignored the fact that the studio is putting her in the Supporting Actress category and recognised her in her rightful position as Boyhood’s lead, honouring her ahead of Julianne Moore.  Read Full Intro
