Emma Watson singing

You know what everyone has an opinion on, even if they aren’t qualified to have an opinion on it?

Singing.

I sing good (to no one but myself). And I have all kinds of opinions on who can sing and who can’t sing. I know you do too. We all do. Apparently because we have ears. For those of us who have the luxury of being able to hear, we often think that that’s the only requirement to judge a singing voice.

Some people have more requirements than others. Duana is a musical theatre geek and has studied music. Fine. She gets a pass. Emily, Kathleen, Sarah, and I however… I don’t know what our justification is. And yet last night, we all jumped on an email thread to debate Emma Watson’s singing in the new clip for Beauty And The Beast.

Emily:

YASSSSSSSSSS

Sarah:
Are we not gonna talk about how Belle just takes sh-t without paying and also f-cks up the laundry girls' work?

Also, was that R&J reference in the original song or is that an update?

Kathleen:
Are we not gonna talk about how Emma Watson can barely sing?

No, I'm pretty sure in the OG she references Jack and the Beanstalk.

Emily:
It’s an update. The original Disney version references Jack and the Beanstalk.
She’s singing! Maybe she sucks at multitasking

Sarah:
Emma Watson is the best singer in your high school musical.

Duana:
Maybe in YOUR high school musical.

Sarah:
My high school's musicals were known for their very impressive sets. So...yes.

Lainey:
Wait. So can she sing or can she not sing?

Sarah:
I think she sounds fine, in that "fine" means "obviously processed", but she's not extraordinary.

Musical theater nerds (Duana), who could have played Belle that you would consider a quality singer? Like a real singer, not a "helped along by a computer" singer.

Duana:
She can barely sing. There's no showmanship to it, though there's a little La La Land style charm. Think Mamma Mia, not like, Anna Kendrick in Into The Woods.

As for who - I believe Demi Lovato has real, belting singing chops. Kendrick obviously but too old now. Age-appropriately... I don't know. Like obviously Shanice from the Wiz but she was hired as a singer, you know?

Emily:
She’s no Paige O’Hara and I’m biased because this is one of my top 5 favourite Disney songs and scenes, but I AM FULLY SOLD, UNLIKE KATHLEEN…and everyone else. I can’t wait for the full video.

Sarah:
I've said it before--there's no way this movie is bad. Either it's actually good, like Cinderella, or else it's a glorious mess. We win no matter what.

Emily:
With what we’ve seen so far I can’t imagine this is a glorious mess. Whether Emma can belt it out or not…this scene retains its original charm.

Duana:
But I agree with Sarah that there's a 'who-does-she-think-she-is' tone that the original doesn't have. Whatever that may mean.

Lainey:
So Anne Hathaway is better?

Kathleen:
Dude Anne Hathaway is like the Jennifer Hudson to her Jennifer Lopez. She's mediocre at best. It's not a debate.

Duana:
In fact you'll notice they released a clip where she sings very little...

Do you want to weigh in?

I know you do.
