Ever since they arrived in New York I’ve been rubbing up the Gossip Genie for it, for Amal and George Clooney to show up at the MET Gala. How could it not happen? Anna Wintour was at their wedding. Anna had the Clooneys seated at her table. Anna Wintour supervised Amal’s fitting with John Galliano for Maison Margiela!

There are several connections here. As you know, Oscar De La Renta’s most prominent final creation was Amal’s wedding dress. De La Renta was also the one who offered Galliano residency at his label in 2013, representing his first steps back into the fashion world after he was disgraced and then publicly forgiven by the Anti-Defamation League in 2013. That relationship was encouraged by Anna who is clearly now bridging Galliano and Amal Clooney, the international human rights lawyer.

The dress then was a big deal. And… how did it go?

The top is amazing. The skirt…the tiered ruffles… would have been a disaster at Marchesa. Imagine that at Marchesa? Amal Clooney would have looked like she shopped at the mall. Thankfully it’s saved by Galliano’s talent. The construction holds up. So that from certain angles there’s an interesting staggered spiral effect that gives it a lot more luxury than it probably deserves.

Can we move on from the dress now to talk about the Clooneys’ moment with Sofia Vergara and Meatball Joe? Look at the expression on Meatball’s face. It’s like he’s just met Jesus. When would he ever get this close otherwise?

And I do really enjoy the shots of the Clooneys leaving the ball, his bow tie now removed and his shirt unbuttoned, ready for a second (and proper) dinner.
