Dear Gossips,

There wasn’t much suspense or surprise at the Emmys, at least not where the winners were concerned, right? Succession, The Bear, and Beef – it’s what happened at the Globes, and Critics Choice, and now at the Emmys, these are the three series that basically pulled off a sweep.

But the Emmys weren’t just about the awards, it was a celebration of television, 75 years of it, which means the show was heavy on nostalgia, bringing together the casts of beloved past hits, like Cheers and Grey’s Anatomy and Ally McBeal.

I personally enjoyed it, for the most part, because I’m actually old enough to remember them, but I kept wondering whether or not Gen Z knew would even know what the f-ck was going on since, you know, it feels like every day on TikTok there’s someone making a video about how gagged they are that Lenny Kravitz is Zoë’s dad.

I’m not trying to be disparaging of the youth. My point is, shows like the Emmys keep trying to court younger viewers – and I’m not sure going back multiple decades in TV is doing it for them. Still, I would like to believe that it shouldn’t matter. Because what we’ve been saying about award shows is that the people who love them will always love them. And that’s the audience that award show producers should be catering to.

We’re the ones who aren’t complaining that the Emmys or Oscars are too long, we’re the ones who get off on award season every year, it’s our favourite time of year. We’re the ones who can’t keep an Instagram reel down to 30 seconds and under because we want to say and show all the things. We’re the ones who would rather watch a three-hour award show instead of a football game. We’re the ones marveling at how Arsenio Hall still looks the goddamn same… howwwww?!

Arsenio presented the Writing in a Variety Series category to Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. Last Week Tonight also won the Emmy for Outstanding Scripted Variety Series, its first time competing in the category and promptly beating out Saturday Night Live. This change opened the door for Trevor Noah and The Daily Show to finally win in the Outstanding Talk Series category and the reason I’m mentioning this is because during the team’s acceptance speech, Roy Wood Jr went viral…

…and admitted to it, LOLOLOLOL.

So we did get a lipreading scandal at the Emmys! “Scandal” is a stretch…but the trend continues!

While the Emmys were short on suspense and scandal, the surprises did come on the red carpet. As I mentioned yesterday, the TV stars were indeed (for the most part) holding back their big looks for Emmy night. We’re getting to as many as we can in today’s coverage starting in this space with Ellen Pompeo.

Some people on our live chat at The Squawk weren’t feeling it – but I disagree. I really, really like this on her. It’s a fresh choice for her. Ellen works with Petra Flannery who is Emma Stone’s longtime stylist, and you can see the DNA similarity, right? That crisp white collar with the black bow over the shimmery top is clean and polished and sexy and elegant all at the same time. For me it might be her best look ever.

I also quite enjoyed Tracee Ellis Ross. The still photos don’t do it justice, because that f-cking Emmys backdrop was trash. You have to see this in motion though, and the back. She’s right, this ponytail is a showstopper.
