Selena Gomez hooking up with The Weeknd is a perfect gossip story. Because good gossip is never just about two people. Good gossip is about those people and the people they’re connected to. Good gossip should always impact an entire celebrity’s ecosystem. This particular ecosystem is complicated, full of drama queens (who claim they’re not drama queens) and power players who fight their fights the new school way (on Snapchat and Instagram) and the old school way – tabloids and entertainment outlets.
Yesterday I posted about Justin Bieber encouraging TMZ to suggest that Selena Gomez is only using The Weeknd. Today US Weekly is reporting that Bella Hadid has also been trying to tell Abel that Selena is exploiting him:
Friends since at least November 2015, when they both performed at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in NYC, Gomez, 24, and The Weeknd, 26, got together innocently enough. While recording music after completing a three-month rehab stint for depression and health issues related to lupus in November, Gomez received some help from the “Starboy” singer. “They started hanging as friends and it became romantic,” explains a Gomez insider. “They’re working on very sexy music, so it spilled over.”
But Hadid has taken note of Gomez’s pattern. (Refresher: In January 2015, Gomez romanced Zedd while recording “I Want You to Know,” and a year later she hooked up with collaborator Charlie Puth.) “Bella has reached out to Abel a few times and told him Selena is using him,” says the Hadid pal. “He thinks she’s just jealous and isn’t listening to her.”
What I find fascinating about this line of attack, by both JB and Bella, is that it assumes that The Weeknd is an idiot love sick puppy who can’t see that a scheming asshole is trying to manipulative him. First of all. Second, in taking the position that Abel’s judgment has been weakened by his dick, JB and Bella’s accusation also transfers a lot of power to Selena. On the one hand, they’re trying to say that she needs men to boost her career – which would mean that she’s an inferior star. But on the other they’re claiming that she’s so influential and crafty that she can hold that much sway over the men. Or it’s a teardown of her character and a boost to her ego, all at the same time.
Most importantly though, this is all a hard line. There’s no going back on this. Like whatever loose and mild friendship existed between Gigi and Bella and Selena is probably irrevocably broken. Because not only are they calling her a famewhore, they’re also implying that she’s not talented. I don’t see how this can ever be mended. Unless, of course, Taylor Swift has a waterslide that can specifically fix these kinds of problems.
