Last night marked the official end of The Late Show with David Letterman. After his final interview, his last broadcast was dedicated to best-of segments, tributes, thank yous, and one last Top 10, which lined up some of Letterman’s most frequent and favorite celebrity guests. He’s always been a champion of comedians—the way he said “Oh Andy” after a clip of Andy Kaufman is probably the greatest tribute to Kaufman you will ever hear—and when Tina Fey and Julia Louis-Dreyfus offer up the best one liners, Letterman’s delight is palpable.
But the night wasn’t really geared toward comedy, though Letterman had a pretty killer one liner of his own in his monologue about the Tonight Show.
Instead it was more about remembering and saying thank you to those who worked on the show with him, including a touching tribute to his writers. But then they included a clip from an old remote segment in which Letterman worked (“worked”) the drive-thru at a Taco Bell. This is the way I want to remember David Letterman—subversive, spiky, and f*cking hilarious.
