Whitney according to Robyn

If you are a fan of Whitney Houston, you know about Robyn Crawford. Robyn was Whitney’s best friend from adolescence to adulthood. Robyn was Whitney’s creative director for a while and toured with her often. Where there was Whitney, there was always Robyn, until Robyn quit and left in 2000 because she couldn’t watch Whitney spiral out anymore …and also Bobby Brown. Full Story

When you give Jamie Foxx a microphone at the Governors Awards, and let him know he has three to four minutes to adlib remarks while in a room with this year's Oscar contenders like Tom Hanks, Leonardo DiCaprio and Scarlett Johansson, you have to know the hype-man is going to dole out the shout-outs. Full Story

Eddie Murphy returns to acting after a three year hiatus with Dolemite Is My Name, a biopic of Dolemite creator Rudy Ray Moore. Like every other biopic I’ve seen at TIFF this year, Dolemite is standard, run-of-the-mill biographical stuff, taking no real risks and doing nothing particularly inventive with the material. Full Story

Lainey emailed me last night and said I needed to go look at Norm Macdonald’s Twitter. So I did and it turns out that Macdonald, who appeared on SNL40 over the weekend, was having an SNL-themed story time about the week running up to the anniversary special. The big revelation that everyone is latching onto is that Eddie Murphy was supposed to appear in the “Celebrity Jeopardy” sketch as Bill Cosby, but that he backed out at the eleventh hour because he didn’t want to “kick a man when he was down”. Full Story

And now for everything that reminds us that Saturday Night Live is never quite as good as we want it to be. Actors impersonating characters During the “Weekend Update” bit several actors appeared as famous SNL characters. Emma Stone impersonated Gilda Radner’s “Roseanne Roseannadanna”, Melissa McCarthy attempted to take on Chris Farley and “Matt Foley”, and Edward Norton almost got there with “Stefon” and Bill Hader. Full Story

The Oscars are a clusterf*ck

Sarah Posted by Sarah at November 10, 2011 16:08:05 November 10, 2011 16:08:05

I have no doubt that in the long run, the 2012 Academy Awards will be fine, but man, right now, it’s a mess. In the wake of Brett Ratner resigning (read: getting canned) as co-producer, Eddie Murphy, the host he recruited, quit the telecast. I have one thought about this. Full Story

A handy list of actors who think you’re stupid

Sarah Posted by Sarah at November 7, 2011 15:14:45 November 7, 2011 15:14:45

That’s what Forbes should have called their list of “Hollywood’s most overpaid stars”. In and of itself, there’s nothing wrong with commercial filmmaking. It’s not a completely soulless endeavor, it’s just that it’s frustrating when movies consistently get made to the lowest common denominator and people with actual talent squander it repeatedly on trash. Full Story

Eddie Murphy hosting Oscars 2012: Golden or awful?

Lainey Posted by Lainey at September 7, 2011 08:27:23 September 7, 2011 08:27:23

Written by Sarah Last month it was announced that Brett Ratner would be co-producing the Oscars in 2012. This struck me as hilarious, mostly because the Academy is so transparently desperate to put on a show that will appeal to the kids that they hired a director known for driving franchises into the ground. Full Story
