Sigh.
Everyone sucks in Hollywood. Even the ones who weren’t supposed to suck…they suck too.
As I’m sure you’ve heard, there’s a writer’s strike going on in Hollywood. And on the off chance you think it won’t affect you…think again. Unless you don’t watch television. But if you do, if you do watch Heroes, or Grey’s Anatomy (why???), or 24 or Lost or Ugly Betty or Jon Stewart or Colbert…if you watch any or more, if this thing isn’t resolved soon (and they say it won’t be) it will mean only sh-tty reality tv all the time.
Most celebrities are siding with the writers … and so they should. Without writers, they are nothing. Ellen Degeneres however continues to cross the picket line, opening old wounds from those who’ve harboured grudges against her in the past, and resulting in criticism from industry insiders who can’t believe she’s not onside.
It’s been a tough few months for Miss Ellen, taking a huge hit after that dog debacle – polarising opinions persist as to whether or not Ellen did Iggy justice – and now this: revelations that Ellen, in contrast to her endearing demeanour on her show, is actually a first class bitch.
According to Surgical Strikes, written by some dude claiming he used to work on Ellen’s old show, Ellen doesn’t properly credit her staff, she berates people in public, and sells people out all the time. Click on the link above to read the entire rant.
Ellen meanwhile explained her decision to cross the line this way:
"There"s a writers" strike going on, and here in Los Angeles, it"s a huge story. I want to say I love my writers. I love them. In honor of them today, I"m not going to do a monologue (ed: big whoop!). I support them and hope that they get everything they"re asking for. And I hope it works out soon. In the meantime, people have traveled across the country. They"ve made plans. They"re here. I want to do everything I can to make your trip enjoyable and give you a show."
In other words, she is choosing her fans over her the people who helped her develop a fanbase in the first place. And implying also that Jay Leno, Letterman, Conan, that all of those who’ve shut down to support the writers couldn’t give a rat’s ass about people who’ve travelled across the country to see them. Only Ellen cares, I suppose.
Which is great. It’s so great that Ellen is considerate towards the fans. But here’s what one industry insider told Page Six: "this is her last chance in show business. This show is the only thing keeping her from a lifetime of touring college campuses."
And the fact of the matter is, eventually this will be resolved. And eventually these people will go back to work. And they will remember that she didn’t have their backs. And then how will she make her fans laugh?
Besides, wouldn’t her fans understand about artistic solidarity??? Or maybe it’s just me. Maybe Ellen is taking it unfairly. Maybe it’s just me…
