Ewan McGregor was in New York yesterday. He’s promoting his new film Beginners. There was a screening and he also dropped by David Letterman. Looks hot, right?
In Beginners, Ewan learns his dad is gay. His dad is also dying from cancer. It’s a cute little trailer and Christopher Plummer looks delightful and rather delighted to be playing the part. Sometimes you can tell when an actor is really, really loving his role, non? Beginners also features Melanie Laurent, and you’ll recall, Ewan and Melanie became quite close while making this movie. Whatever friendship or more he had with Melanie did not seem to shake his marriage. Ewan and wife Eve have been married 16 years. He spoke very fondly of their relationship in a recent interview:
"I still feel we are beginners. I don't think having separate bathrooms is a key to a successful marriage, if you love one another. I think loving each other is the most important part of it, whether you share a bathroom or not. I don't have any secrets other than that. I found my partner, my life partner, and I really am in love with my wife and we have a lovely time and we share a long history together and children together and that's it. It's not because I do a certain gesture that she stays with me or anything. I think it's just because we love each other. I've been in my relationship for a very long time. There are always new things that happen - things that surprise you or you discover about yourself and your partner all the time. However the feeling, the lovely feeling of having been with someone for a really long time, it's not about being a beginner - it's the fact you know each other so well and you're so comfortable in each other's company. It's about where it goes from there. That's what makes our relationship, our marriage, our partnership, whatever. It is so wonderful." (Source)
Maybe I’m reading too much into it, maybe it’s because theirs has never been a conventional situation in my mind, but that description seems to be exactly what Ewan and Eve are – they love each other, it’s a family, there’s honesty and trust, but not necessarily conformity, right?
Anyway, what has Ewan been up to lately? A busy work schedule. Several small films and also shooting Jack the Giant Killer in England. Ewan plays a knight. Nicholas Hoult will be Jack.
