Click here for a refresher on the time James Franco wanted to get a hotel room to share with a 17 year old girl called Lucy on social media. She posted their exchanges online which is when the whole world found out he’s a gross pervy loser.
Franco appeared today on Kelly & Michael and tried to explain what happened:
“I'm embarrassed and I guess I'm just a model of how social media is tricky.”
Oh OK. So it’s not that he was behaving like a predator, it’s that he was actually a VICTIM of social media. And it’s so hard to be celebrity, you know?
“The embarassing ritual of meeting someone is doubly embarrassing” when you’re a big star and what you do on social media – PUBLIC by its very nature, you idiot – is put on blast. Still, he suggests that he was naïve to it all and didn’t think that Lucy would end up sharing his digital pick-up online. So…it’s Lucy’s fault?!?!?!?
“You just don't know who is on the other end.”
The implication here is that the person on the other end of his situation betrayed him. Again, he’s the victim. A grown man, with resources and connections and protection, is victim to a 17 year old civilian who was upfront about her age even though HE was the one who asked her if she wanted to get a hotel room…?????
Franco’s only mistake?
“I used bad judgement and I learned my lesson.”
And there we are. He’s off. Easily. No outrage, no problem. And you wonder why rape culture is on the rise.
