The bar that Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom has to clear is just “be less of a sexist mess than Jurassic World”. That’s it. The bar could not be lower. Jurassic Park has never and will never spawn a good sequel because it’s a one-trick pony, story-wise, and every subsequent Jurassic movie will repeat that trick: Dinosaurs escape, people get eaten. Full Story

Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs

Wes Anderson’s meticulous, highly stylized worlds are particularly suited to stop-motion animation, the most meticulous and stylized form of animation. It’s no coincidence that one of Anderson’s best films is The Fantastic Mr. Fox, his first attempt at stop-motion, and now he follows up Fox with another animated animal tale, Isle of Dogs. Full Story

Every year people are like, Who “won” Comic Con? And every year the answer is: Marvel. No one puts on a better show, and you know they’ve got the magic touch when they don’t actually have to release anything online and they STILL get the most hype. They screened a scene from Black Panther and a new trailer and brought the house down—many say this is the biggest moment they’ve ever seen in Hall H, even topping the reveal of the Avengers line-up in 2010—and they didn’t bother to put that sh*t online. Full Story

To give you things you didn’t even know you want, such as Jeff Goldblum returning to the Jurassic franchise as sexy mathematician Dr. Ian Malcolm. Last night it was announced that Goldblum will be in the as yet untitled Jurassic World sequel, joining Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, who will hopefully not be running around in high heels this time (the heels were stupid in and of themselves, but audiences also latched onto them because Jurassic World has a lot of problems under the spectacle and they came to represent that cognitive dissonance). Full Story

New Wave Thor

Sarah Posted by Sarah at March 9, 2017 14:21:39 March 9, 2017 14:21:39

Entertainment Weekly has the first look at Thor: Ragnarok on its cover this week, and it is an Eighties-fantastic explosion of COLOR and LIGHT and HAIR. Thor’s got an entirely new look, including a new haircut—which I am way into—and a suspiciously missing hammer. Full Story

I’m not going to sit here and pretend like Independence Day is some great movie—it’s not. It’s nonsensical trash like all of Roland Emmerich’s movies. But it is at least fun nonsensical trash, arguably the only Emmerich movie that is in any way actually enjoyable. Independence Day: Resurgence, the twenty-years-later sequel/soft reboot, is neither fun nor enjoyable—it is straight up nonsensical Emmerich trash. Full Story

In case you need a reminder, Independence Day 2 is actually happening and will be released in summer 2016. April/May is when the summer ’16 movies go into production, and to that end, Independence Day 2 is getting its ducks in a row, announcing some key casting. Relative unknown Jessie Usher will star as the grown-up version of Will Smith’s son from the first movie—Smith won’t be appearing in the sequel—and Liam, The Lesser Hemsworth will also star in a lead role. Full Story
