Everything I hate about Jonah Hill, 2X Oscar nominee and friend of Leo, Scorsese, and Brange (before they broke), was all on display last night when he took the stage to present Best Actress to his friend Emma Stone. It was right after David Harbour had everyone cheering and screaming with his “call to arms” in the form of art after Stranger Things was named Best Dramatic Ensemble. (And after Winona Ryder gave us each and every one of her feelings – more on that in a minute.) Jonah Hill is a 2X Oscar nominee and friend of Leo, Scorsese, and Brange (before they broke). So I guess he was too cool to feel the moment, too chill to be swept away by the emotion. Because he came out and, instead of doing his job, which is to read the f-cking prompter, present the award, and get the f-ck off stage, decided to condescend. “Take it easy there, dude” is the tone he came with. “Calm down, nerd” is basically what he was saying.
Right. Because he gets to sit at the cool kids table with Leo and light Leo’s cigar when he snaps his fingers and suddenly that gives him the goddamn right to show up at the SAGs like he’s the only one who gets to decide what’s uplifting and funny at the same time at an awards show.
You know that trope in high school movies when the geek starts hanging out with the popular kids and acts like an asshole to all his old friends but realises the error of his ways by the end and accepts who he is and why he never needs to change? What sucks most about Jonah Hill, 2X Oscar nominee and friend of Leo, Scorsese, and Brange (before they broke), is that he made that a lie. The message at the end of his story is that you never want to go back to being the geek. The geek always wanted to be a bully.
