Dear Gossips,

It was so good to see Maya Rudolph and Kate McKinnon join Kristen Wiig onstage for the opening monologue on Saturday Night Live this weekend. They’ll go down as all-time greats on the show for sure. Actually, they already are. The women of SNL have always held it down – and I’m not sure we do a good enough job acknowledging that. Especially Maya. Is she underrated, in general? I know she has her Emmys but I don’t know if we celebrate Maya enough on a scale deserving of her work. Maybe it’s because I’m currently making my way through Big Mouth but, MY GOD, she is spectacular. Big Mouth has been one of my favourites of 2020, and I know I’m three years too late on this but haven’t we all been catching up on the television that we never could get caught up on in the before times?

This was Kristen’s fourth time hosting since she left as a regular cast member; she’s currently promoting the upcoming release of Wonder Woman 1984 which is probably what a lot of us are watching for Christmas, right? Unless you’re in New Zealand, it’s not like many of us can go anywhere. Perhaps that’s why they decided to go with what’s familiar, bringing back some of her greatest hit characters. I don’t know that every sketch worked since by now we’ve seen them all so many times but maybe that was the point – nostalgia is always potent this time of year.

As for the best joke of the night, if you watched, I’m sure you know already what it was. Michael Che and Colin Jost are not my favourites but I do enjoy that thing they do when they make each other tell jokes they’ve written for one another without having seen them ahead of time. This is the best joke Che has written all year.
