Spoilers Somehow, Watchmen keeps getting better, which should be impossible given this show’s high standard from the jump. But building off last week’s stellar episode, the latest Watchmen, “This Extraordinary Being”, ups the ante again, giving us an episode full of answers, yes, but also the strongest thematic entry into Watchmen yet. Full Story

Watchmen episode 4 preview   In the last episode, Watchmen both brought us closer to the original graphic novel, and expanded the world of the show. Now that the show is not just about Angela Abar, but also Laurie Blake, the questions just keep mounting. Full Story

There are many unanswered questions and mysterious premises in Watchmen, but one thing we can say for certain about this show is that it is super into Doctor Manhattan’s big blue dick. Last episode it was Adrian Veidt making his clone-slave hang dong in his play about Manhattan, and this episode we learn that a Doctor Manhattan-inspired vibrator exists. Full Story

Watchmen, like Game of Thrones, invites theorizing. We’re two episodes in and this is already a richly detailed world, with big plot setups and seemingly minor background information that may or may not end up being relevant. Unlike Game of Thrones, however, book readers don’t really have an advantage here. Full Story

Watch Watchmen for Regina King (at first)

A groundbreaking graphic novel in the 1980s, Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen remains today one of the most influential pieces of 20th century speculative fiction. A deconstruction of superhero comics and the geopolitics of the Cold War, Watchmen is a kind of adaptation holy grail. Its rich iconography and story of broken and twisted superheroes makes it a prime cinematic target, but the single adaptation to date is a mixed bag, at best; Zack Snyder’s 2009 film kinda-sorta works, but changes to the ending of the story are still being debated a decade later. Full Story

Regina King is the reigning Best Supporting Actress Oscar winner. When you win an Oscar, that’s how you are introduced wherever you go – Regina King, Oscar winner. She was at the Emmys last night, and she’s won a few Emmys, but even at the Emmys, the Oscar mention came first. The Emmys, then, is her victory lap kickoff. Full Story

There were a lot of “Queens” in attendance last night. Queen, the band. Queen Latifah. Olivia Coleman and Helen Mirren in spirit. The Queen of Wakanda, Angela Bassett. Billy Porter if we’re still saying “yasss Queen!” And then there was Regina King. Lainey schooled me that “Regina” means “Queen” in Latin, so she counts for that alone, but Regina King has earned her spot as Hollywood royalty aside from the origins of her name. Full Story

Roma and The Favourite have the most Oscar nominations (10) this year. And, since it’s the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, The Favourite was always expected to do well at the BAFTAs. Roma took Best Picture, maintaining its position as the frontrunner with two weeks now to go before the Oscars, and Oscar voting set to begin on Tuesday and this is a strong showing, for sure. Full Story

All of us who write on this site have written repeatedly about how much we love If Beale Street Could Talk. It’s so … much. This is a film that will hold up, there will never be a time, in 10 years, 20 years, 100 years, when it won’t be relevant, when it won’t be seen as a masterpiece from the storytelling to the acting to the directing to the score. Full Story

That was my poor attempt at a play on If Beale Street Could Talk, but seriously, no one talks like Regina King. In an award season that refuses to give us a break from insufferable, worse-than-Hathaway twee speeches from Lady Gaga (I like Gaga but can she DO LESS please?), we’ve been saved by Regina King. Full Story
