Scarlett Johansson got stuck in traffic on her way to the New York Film Festival press conference for Marriage Story the other day but her seven minute absence only bolstered the crowd's enthusiastic appreciation for the film, and her performance. Her sweet hug with co-star Alan Alda right after she arrived did not hurt either. Full Story

After playing in the Marvel sandbox, Taika Waititi returns to his natural state, making films with a precise blend of comedy, drama, and pathos. His latest is Jojo Rabbit, in which he becomes the latest filmmaker to satirize Hitler since Charlie Chaplin first did it in 1940s in The Great Dictator. (In that film, Chaplin plays both a Hitler analog and a persecuted Jewish barber, so I don’t know why some people are acting shocked that a filmmaker would dare portray a fictionalized version of Hitler, this is a long cinematic tradition. Full Story

It’s not a good time to be a Nazi

Ahead of its TIFF premiere, a new trailer for Jojo Rabbit has been released, which doubles down on the satirical tone of the teaser. There are lots of “bumbling idiots” hijinks, and Taika Waititi is in bright blue contacts as Imaginary Friend Hitler which is a GREAT touch, a subtle reminder that the real Hitler looked nothing like his Aryan ideal. Full Story

The Black Widow movie continues teasing us, making a stop at D23 the other day where some footage was screened—sounds like the same kitchen fight scene between Natasha Romanov and Yelena Belova—though the cast, still filming, was not present for this one. We do have, however, some new Black Widow duds to examine. Full Story

Dear Gossips,

The Toronto International Film Festival released its schedule yesterday and, as usual, most of the major titles and, therefore, the big celebrities, are heavily stacked on the first weekend. Saturday night is the one everyone is marking on their calendars though.  Read Full Intro

This year’s Comic-Con was strangely quiet, especially on the film side, so quiet that Marvel didn’t even have to pull out all the stops to “win” the weekend with their Saturday evening panel. All they had to do was literally show up, which is what they did. Marvel rocked up to Hall H and spent 90% of their panel confirming news we already knew, including confirming that the Black Widow movie is real. Full Story

(Lainey: I edit almost every post that goes up on this site. I have not read this post. And I’m sad about that because I love reading Sarah’s articles so much. But I’m also trying to go into Avengers: Endgame as clean as possible and while Sarah has assured us that she’s written a UNspoilery review below, and that she’s given ample warning where necessary, she’s signed off on me not editing it because she doesn’t want to be blamed for whatever dramatics I might cook up when and after I see it - because I KNOW I’m going to be dramatic. Full Story

Avengers: Endgame opens in two days and I CAN’T WAIT TO TALK ABOUT IT. Infinity War was not a movie I felt compelled to discuss after the fact, but oh boy are we going to be talking about Endgame. One reason to talk about it is that this is the end of an era. Sure, Marvel will continue making movies (forever, if they have their way), and there will be another Avengers movie, at some point. Full Story
