Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik have been dating just over a year. Before they hooked up, Zayn ended his engagement to Perrie Edwards from the girl group Little Mix – they’re like the budget British Fifth Harmony (Little Mix fans, come at me). Now, Life & Style is reporting that Zayn asked Gigi to marry him but Gigi turned him down. This is coming from Life & Style so there’s a good chance it’s bullsh-t but according to the “source,” Gigi thinks Zayn is moving too fast: “She’s only 21 and doesn’t feel ready to tie the knot, so she turned him down.”
Gigi is 21. Zayn is 23. They’ve been together for a year and in that time they may have broken up once and got back together. Of course, they shouldn’t get married. Of course, they are too young. Of course, it’s a bad idea for two celebs in their early twenties who just had breakout years professionally to rush into a marriage but god, it would be SO GREAT for gossip. As Lainey noted when she sent me this story, we just want to see what their wedding looks like. Aside from the inevitability that they would both look stupidly attractive, there’s the gossip that would come with the guest list. Taylor Swift gets an invite for sure but do you keep her and Kendall Jenner apart? Do the boys of One Direction make the cut or does Zayn pull a Justin Timberlake and leave them off the list?
The thing I love about this story is that it makes Zayn, the guy who broods like he lives in a fragrance ad, a habitual proposer. He’s Ryan Reynolds. Remember Reynolds has been married twice and engaged three times. In this narrative, Gigi is the level-headed pessimist and Zayn is the passionate hopeless romantic. I love that it’s not the other way around.
Zayn and Gigi are currently the reigning teen dream couple. They’re this generation’s Justin and Britney or Brad and Gwyneth. Neither of those couples made it to the altar. Actually, I can’t remember the last A-List celebrity quickie marriage, especially with a couple younger than 25. It’s time. The more I think about it, I really wish Gigi had said yes.
