PROGRAMMING NOTE: Monday is a stat holiday in Canada so we will be dark and returning to regular gossip schedule on Tuesday.

One of the most highly anticipated films of the year is screening in Cannes tonight – Ari Aster’s Eddington opens wide and it’s an ambitious move because it’s summer blockbuster movie season but this isn’t a superhero big explosions kind of film. Eddington is for sure a political and social commentary about information or even disinformation and community values. But Eddington is A24, a studio with its own cult following, and a great Oscars track record. And it can sell the movie with at cast that includes Pedro Pascal, Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, and Austin Butler, all of whom were at the world premiere tonight.

That’s two Oscar winners, an Oscar nominee, and a SAG winner in Pedro Pascal. Plus he’s also Mister Fantastic in the Fantastic Four. It’ll be really, really interesting to see how this film plays to the Cannes audience and what kind of momentum Eddington can build coming out of the festival. It is seen as a hard sell to the Oscar Academy but then again, it was thought that another A24 film, Everything Everywhere All At Once was a hard sell and look what happened there. Let’s see how much controversy Eddington might generate, especially in these times with this particular administration.

Emma, by the way, is wearing Louis Vuitton, custom, not surprising since she’s been the house ambassador for so long. This I’m sure is a polarising look and I have no doubt people are already calling it a bib like they’re the only ones who’ve made the observation. I quite like the construction of the disc around her shoulders, the way it’s so flat and so solid that it absorbs so much light. You cannot miss her on that carpet and, well, that’s the point.

The first night of the first weekend of Cannes is always a big attraction and Emma and Joaquin weren’t the only Oscar winners present. Natalie Portman is at the festival promoting an animated film, Arco, and she walked the carpet tonight in Dior.

Like Emma and LV she’s been associated with Dior for years and this dress is perfectly suited to her. I love the bow detail in front and especially how it looks like it’s been tied so that it’s not in alignment with the bustline but pulled slightly lower on both sides – a small detail but it makes it less twee and gives the dress some extra dimension.

Also an Oscar winner – Angelina Jolie in Brunello Cucinelli and Chopard jewels because as mentioned earlier this week, she’s the Trophée Chopard Godmother this year to recipients Marie Colomb and Finn Bennett with whom she looked like she was having a great time.

What else happened today…

I first learned about MrBeast a couple of years ago because we were having dinner at a friend’s place and his kid, at the time, was 6 years old. Apparently, at least back then, he was huge among kids. And now he’s super controversial so I wonder whether or not he’s still huge with kids. His latest f-ckup has offended a whole country, Mexico. Another day, another premiere for Nicole Kidman because she doesn’t stop working. This black suit is great on her and those shoes are the perfect choice. (Go Fug Yourself)

Samantha Bee is talking about menopause because as she says, “Gen X women don’t give a sh-t” and she’s right, we don’t. You will hear us talk about menopause all day all the f-cking time. Because it has NOT been talked about enough throughout history which is why there are so many gaps in women’s health. So more from Samantha Bee and Naomi Watts and Halle Berry about vaginal dryness and lube, please. (Celebitchy)

Before the SNL50 season finale tomorrow, here’s a piece about all the international versions of the show. (Vulture)

It’s been a week since I’ve posted about Bill Belichick and Jordon Hudson but I know there are a lot of people who are still deep into this story. Constance Grady unpacks the fascination. (Vox)
