Adam Sandler was honored last night at the Santa Barbara Film Festival with the Maltin Modern Master Award, a sort of moot point since he did not get an Oscar nomination or a SAG nomination and he’s not really campaigning anymore and this kind of glad-handing event mostly exists to grease award season wheels.

His non-nominee status is reflected in his attire for the event, which is not his infamous “basketball shorts on the red carpet” style but is an “I did not think about this much” level of effort.

Adam Sandler is probably going to end up getting an honorary Oscar in another 10-15 years. He’s a beloved movie star, the Oscars will eventually acknowledge that (see also: Tom Cruise and Angela Bassett), but I’m not confident they’ll ever get over his bad-on-purpose comedies enough to properly nominate him. I’m also not crying him a river given his nine-figure Netflix deal. Adam Sandler is a winner no matter what the Academy does.

Also at the event were Jane Fonda and Connie Britton, an inter-generational friendship I didn’t know I needed.

I like that they’re both channeling 1970s Columbo but in different ways. Connie looks like a reporter who gives Columbo a hard time for appearing to not know what he is doing, Jane looks like the murderess matching wits with Columbo over her fourth husband’s corpse. Why yes, I am rewatching classic Columbo, why do you ask? That sh-t holds up!
