Dear Gossips,

Today is Meghan Markle’s birthday. A couple of weeks ago, when the British royal family was celebrating Big G’s birthday, I wondered whether or not they’d do social media posts for the next royal birthday. The question has been answered: all three senior British royal social media accounts have dedicated birthday messages:

If they hadn’t, it would have been a story. Now the story, in some circles at least, is how gracious the Queen, Prince Charles, and Prince William and Kate are, especially since so much of the British royal airspace has been dominated by Finding Freedom and the revelations contained in the book, due out next week and is currently the #1 bestselling book in UK, ahead of Stephenie Meyer’s Midnight Sun, the companion story to Twilight written from Edward Cullen’s point of view. OK, don’t lie. How many of you have already finished it, LOL?

Back to Meghan Markle and her birthday though – how’s this for a sexist headline? The front page of the Telegraph today:

The Telegraph's sexist headline for Meghan Markle's birthday

Well there’s a lovely birthday message. Happy 39th Birthday. It’s the year before 40, an “unsettling” age for women. So enjoy it while you can!

Maybe the author of the piece isn’t intending to reinforce those stereotypes, perpetuating the fallacy that women lose value and vitality as they age. But that headline and the placement about the article’s subject is intended to provoke. The publication knows exactly what it’s doing there.

Yours in gossip,

Lainey
