What I mean by “knew better” is that they knew what would happen – or that they dressed for what they knew would happen. What happened is that neither of them won anything. In Claire’s case, that was expected. For Amy Adams… well…
I guess, at this point, it’s also kind of expected? She often doesn’t win and as I’ve said, many times now, all of those people playing the “due game” when Leonardo DiCaprio was contending during the year of The Revenant should have been saying it about Amy Adams first. Because even then she was ahead of him on nominations – and now she’s built up a bigger lead. Not that this is a race that anyone wants to be leading in.
So for all the reaction on Twitter like this…

…well, AGAIN, she was Leo before Leo. She’s not the new anything. She’s BEEN the Leo for longer. It’s just that, for whatever reason, it’s never all that loud for Amy, the outrage over her being snubbed, again. Right? People get pissed the night it happens but it doesn’t take on any kind of life for any amount of time. And I think she knows all of this. I think this is what her dress is saying. This is not the dress you choose when you think you’re going up onstage to collect a trophy. This is not the dress you choose to commemorate a special moment. This dress, the colour, the cut, all of it, is the opposite of special. So, yeah, she knew. Don’t you think she knew?
As for Claire…
I’m going to say it. I’m saying it. Or I’m going to ask it. First Man is no longer in the conversation. So, like, why is she still in the conversation? I get it. Some people can stand out in a movie that isn’t a standout. But, I mean, if you’ve seen First Man, Claire’s performance …isn’t that. And it feels like her being nominated all the time for First Man is actually a continuation of her being nominated for The Crown. She was really f-cking good in The Crown. BUT THIS IS NOT WHERE WE ARE NOW.
