Only five weeks to go before The Devil Wears Prada 2 opens in theatres and the press tour has officially kicked off in Mexico City with Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway. Both of these women are professionals, and they are deeply aware of what this movie means to the original generation that saw the first movie when it came out and subsequent generations that have found it in their own time. They also, as women in the entertainment industry, who have made a sequel specifically for a female and queer audience, which has never been prioritised in Hollywood, understand the significance of fronting a film opening the first weekend in May, known as the first weekend of summer blockbuster season.

But also? It’s fun. It’s fun to be promoting a movie where the working relationships and rivalries among women are centered – plus, of course, FASHION.

This press tour was always, always going to be a fashion show; a runway, and this is on the nose, obviously but… like… how can you not?

For the media event earlier in the day, Meryl was in a perfectly tailored red suit (D&G) alongside Anne in Schiaparelli.

Then at the fan event later on, it was Meryl’s turn in a Schiaparelli trench dress, SO chic, while Annie went with a dark red sequined Stella McCartney swing dress. Yes, that’s THE Meryl Streep, working the runway, her way.

But Devil 2 isn’t the only movie about fashion that Anne Hathaway is promoting over the next few weeks. Mother Mary actually comes out first. So she’s doing double promotion – yesterday she posted a behind-the-scenes video from one of the performance scenes in the film. This is Annie as Mother Mary, the ultimate popstar who needs her old friend, Michaela Coel, to make her a dress.

The trailer for Mother Mary came out in December and while the film does not carry the same expectations as The Devil Wears Prada 2, there’s already been some buzz about whether or not Annie’s performance might result in an Oscar nomination. I know, it’s early, but that’s not the entire conversation – because Devil 2 and Mother Mary are just two of several Anne Hathaway projects that we’re getting in 2026, so we’re talking about an extraordinary showcase of her range over the next nine months.

We’ve talked about how much Zendaya we’ll be getting this year but we have not talked yet about how much Annie is coming. Mother Mary and The Devil Wears Prada 2 will precede Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, one of the most highly anticipated films of the year, setting advance ticket sales records a whole year before its release. That’s July. A month later, in August, Annie will be promoting The End of Oak Street, produced by JJ Abrams. The first teaser dropped last week.

But Annie’s not done. Because then in October it’s Verity, adapted from Colleen Hoover’s book. So just to recap, in order, Anne Hathaway in less than one year will be seen in:

-an art house film (Mother Mary)

-a big budget crowd-pleaser franchise film (The Devil Wears Prada 2)

-a fantasy/historical blockbuster (The Odyssey)

-a blockbuster monster action thriller (The End of Oak Street)

-a psychological domestic drama (Verity)

Like Zendaya, Anne Hathaway isn’t just busy… she is flexing.
