Busy Philipps in a Cropped Stripe
I get so many requests for Busy Philipps and for good reason! She really seems to take joy in dressing and at a time when there’s a lot of quiet luxury and The Row and stealth wealth, people who are bursting with personal style really stand out. And because she shows us a lot of her day-to-day life, we get to see her day-to-day clothes, not just the stylist picks.
Her striped shirt below is the Veronica Beard Aderes Crop Shirt. I love a striped shirt and the cropped versions have grown on me, particularly with a pair of high-waist jeans. The Aderes is nearly sold out (though it might be re-released each season because it’s a staple) but for a close match, the Everlane boxy stripes are fairly close match.
Gabrielle Union’s retreat sweater
Gabrielle Union is also someone who lands in my inbox weekly, for a lot of the same reasons I mentioned above: she has a joyful personal style. She genuinely seems to love getting dressed. This is the Harper Cardi (this year it came out in pink/orange – I have it). There’s limited availability and because I own this I feel confident in telling you that it fits really, really big. As someone who is allergic to body con and always goes for boxy shapes, I don’t say this lightly. And do not hang it. It’s also super warm.
But, and this is a larger conversation, Free People is the kind of brand that can be a costly misstep. Only shop it with clear eyes and a full heart because if you are in a moment of sartorial weakness, you will end up with something expensive and completely impractical. We ALL have these moments of weakness, it’s around 10 pm on a Sunday night when we decide to completely revamp our entire closet with a few pieces. I’m going to start wearing a capsule uniform! I’ve never worn Doc Martens but today is the day! I saw Hailey Bieber in ballet flats with socks and why not me! I’m all for experimentation and wearing what you love, but taking a fashion risk is different than impulsivity.
I have made this mistake many times. (I am not, and never will be, boho!) I call this type of clothing “jingle jangle” clothing. These pieces often contain an element - like an embroidered flower or silk ribbon string or lace trim – that you will grow to hate. One day you want to throw on a worn-in denim shirt and you’ll say to yourself “why the F-CK did I buy a denim shirt with a lace collar” and you will be mad at yourself because on Tuesday morning, you don’t want a lace collar. And if you do, that’s fantastic. But you need to know your own jingle jangle tolerance.
Suki Waterhouse in the fourth trimester
Suki Waterhouse is sharing her fourth trimester self on Instagram, a bold choice because it’s social media and people can’t stop themselves from being complete monsters online. It’s nice to see there are plenty of supportive comments. She tagged her post-partum underwear as Frida. It’s around $16 for a disposable 8-pack (I didn’t see an option for Canadian shipping). Not-controversial opinion here, but post-partum underwear should be free (I remember it being given at the hospital pretty freely but that was years ago and I hope it’s still the case). For some, this type of underwear isn’t really an option but a necessity.
Also asked about her cardigan: she commented that it’s R13 but pretty sure it’s not this season as it’s not available anywhere.
