If you’ve ever thrown on a new coat in early September and confidently sauntered out of the house on a crisp morning, only to be absolutely sweltering by noon, this column is for you.

Some of us are coat people. I don’t collect anything and I am pretty unsentimental and harsh when it comes to editing my wardrobe, but I do love my jackets. I live in the land of the Aritzia Super Puff, but I’m not always utilitarian about my choices. I have a Japanese military coat, a Burberry quilted jacket in yellow, a pink Isabel Marant plaid coat – all bought on sale (yes, there are coats on sale right now!). It rains here, a lot, but I don’t own a coat with hood because I find them uncomfortable and my head is too small and the brim always slips over my eyes. So when I am asked for my personal recommendation, please keep in mind the type of person you are dealing with – a child.

That said! Last year I did find the Aritzia Coaches Jacket incredibly practical and warm enough (keep in mind, this is a coastal climate so it’s damp but not freezing compared to a lot of places). The obvious pairing is a hoodie but I also wore a fleece vest under it.

Selena Gomez: Only Coats in the Building

I knew, before I even pressed send on Tuesday, that I would be asked about Selena Gomez’s camel coat.

She is one of the most followed people on Instagram and with that comes endless fan accounts. I am not getting anything faster than a Selena fan account, I can guarantee that.

She’s wearing the Nikola Padded Trench which is available now. This is an enveloping coat, it is a dominant coat, it is a coat that says, “wood hanger only.” It is heavy, it is serious, it is fall.

There are a few similar, like this one from Coach and this less structured, but equally as cozy, Aritzia coat.

Kaley Cuoco: The Coat Goat

You know who is an underrated coat wearer? Kaley Cuoco. There’s a certain swagger that comes that comes with jetting around the world trying to escape a murder and wearing a selection of great coats.

This is what Kaley did in the first season of The Flight Attendant, which was good. The second season? Errrhhhhh, no comment. BUT. The coat game was solid throughout; it was so good Vulture covered the ten best. Ten coats! How could she pack all those great coats in a carry-on? But she did play a literal flight attendant and can you imagine their packing game? Wonders we cannot even imagine!

That brings me to a lovely reader who is now watching The Flight Attendant, which poses a little problem as it aired three years ago. That means it filmed 4-5 years ago. The good news is Kaley’s character wore a lot of Isabel Marant, like this fantastic pink boucle coat (this one is similar) and the grey plaid (similar here).
