Dear Gossips,

If I was in LA last night I would have tried – and probably not succeeded – to go to Beyond Fest’s 30th anniversary screening of Speed that was followed by a panel discussion featuring director Jan de Bont and Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves… !!!

Up until yesterday, Jan, Sandra, and Keanu had never come together publicly to talk about the movie and it’s also been something like a decade since Sandy and Keanu have been seen together in public. Jan apparently said at the event that he hasn’t seen Sandy and Keanu since the movie came out. Per The Hollywood Reporter:

“I have to say one thing before we continue,” he noted, “we met outside just seconds ago when I saw them for the first time in 30 years. When I saw the movie here [tonight], I’ve never been so proud of those two actors. What they did for me — quite often unnatural to them what they had to do — is just unbelievable. The relationship that these two created together is absolutely amazing. Seeing them back on the screen tonight, it was so realistic. They were absolutely perfect. All the emotions were right, all the laughing was right, all the smiling, the little smooching. It was really, really cool. I had to tell them how great they both were.”

This is big nostalgia, for the people involved, of course, but also for pop culture in general. Sandy and Keanu were 30 when Speed came out. It was five years before The Matrix. Sandra was not the first choice to play the part. They had no idea at the time what the film would do for their careers. We had no idea what these two actors would become – two of the biggest and most beloved movie stars in the world.

But also, aside from all of that, it’s just a perfect action movie. Wild and fun and funny at times and their chemistry was beyond. They have since said, separately, that they were crushing on each other, but it’s always been friendship… although when you look back at moments like this, I mean it was f-cking obvious.

They’re older now, of course, but what hasn’t changed is that they seem just as caring. Look at the body language last night after the group photo. It’s love – not that kind of love but a love no less important.

So today I’m just bombing you with old photos of Sandra and Keanu. I’m thanking myself.

Yours in gossip,

Lainey
