Didn’t expect to see Cameron Diaz come up in my feed today. Because, as we all know, Cameron Diaz has kinda retired from being a celebrity. But she was on Instagram live with Katherine Power of Who What Wear yesterday and she talked about being a parent (her daughter, Raddix, is now three and a half months old) and the current lockdown.
“I’ve kinda been living a quarantine life anyhow because I have a three-month-old, or a three-and-a-half-month old. So my life has been completely quiet and still for the last few months,” Diaz said. “But I was able to have my friends over all the time. And now I just don’t see anybody.”
“But it’s nice, and I love a bubble, I love being in the womb of my home with my husband and cooking,” she continued. “But at the same time it’s crazy that you can’t go out to the world right now.”
When I read that, it occurred to me that while Cameron has indeed been physically distancing during the pandemic, she’s also been professionally distancing now for years. Her career is in self-quarantine, by choice. At some point, Cam just decided she was done with acting, done with the business, and unlike so many celebrities who can’t stand to be away from the attention, she’s really kept away from the spotlight.
Remember, she was one of the biggest movie stars in the world – for a good, long stretch. I know there’s a whole generation out there whose pop culture awakening only started with Lindsay Lohan and High School Musical etc but Cam D was a big f-cking deal, which is why my mind immediately went to…

Well, 15 years ago this past weekend, she hosted Saturday Night Live. And guess who made an appearance in The Barry Gibb talk show sketch? Justin Timberlake. They were about two years into their relationship which ended a couple of years after that. Of course he had to jack her gig. You know, we always talk about (and have widely acknowledged) the fact that he owes a lot of early hype to the fact that he was with Britney Spears, the biggest popstar in the world. And then, after Britney, it’s not like being with Cameron Diaz, one of the biggest movie stars in the world, didn’t help either.
