Dear Gossips,

It’s official: Kpop Demon Hunters is now Netflix’s most-watched film of all time pulling ahead of Red Notice, accomplishing in eight weeks what it took its predecessor 13 weeks to achieve. I said it before and I’ll say it again: this means the two top titles at Netflix are Korean stories, Kpop Demon Hunters now joins Squid Game in supremacy.

Squid Game went on to win all kinds of television awards, Emmys, SAGs, and more. Will Kpop Demon Hunters contend for Oscars? In the music categories, it would be like an all-time snub if “Golden” isn’t nominated for Best Original Song. Variety reported this week that the movie could make Oscar history and is now considered a frontrunner in the Best Animated Feature category. Back to the music side though, it’s possible that even though “Golden” was Netflix’s first choice for submission, more than one song could be submitted for consideration. And the other two very popular tracks from the soundtrack are “Soda Pop” and “Your Idol”. “What It Sounds Like” is also really strong. Imagine if we get a Kpop Demon Hunters medley at the Oscars?!

Submitting several songs might impact the chances of “Golden”, though, as noted in the Variety piece, so we’ll have to see how they strategise. But the overall takeaway here is that we still have not seen any dip for the summer’s biggest movie surprise. Social media activity is still popping and then, when Halloween comes around, there will probably be another surge because Huntr/x and Saja Boys and Derpy Tiger will be all over the place to continue the movie’s momentum into the fall. Can they sustain it all the way until next March though? I mean, really, it’s in the Academy’s best interest if they want to produce a fun show.

And beyond the Oscars? No surprise, Sony and Netflix are now in talks for the sequel. As if there was any doubt.

Before we proceed with the rest of the day, a PROGRAMMING NOTE: we are dark tomorrow for an extra long Labour Day weekend before it gets batsh-t next week. TIFF begins a week today for a week and a half and next weekend it’s the VMAs and after that it’s NYFW and then we run right into the Emmys. We are in for two weeks of relentless pop culture madness so I hope you’re resting too and ready for more gossip on Tuesday 2 September when we return to our regular gossip schedule.

Yours in gossip,

Lainey
