It would be an understatement to describe Cardi B and Offset’s marriage as eventful. That’s why no one among us was too shocked to learn Cardi B filed for divorce this week, describing her three-year marriage as “irretrievably broken” and that “there are no prospects for a reconciliation.”
Let’s talk about reconciliation, because it’s not like this couple hasn’t done exactly that, many times before. You may remember just one month into newlywed life (before the public knew of their secret nuptials) Cardi tweeted “single” after Offset made her “upset.” No official word at the time on what he did to upset her but… it’s not like it was a mystery. Then just 4 months into marriage, their relationship was rocked by a huge cheating scandal. A sex tape allegedly showing Offset and another woman leaked. They made it past that and later welcomed a daughter together. Then in December 2018, they separated. That was when Offset infamously commented on Cardi’s Instagram post announcing the split saying, “Ya’ll won,” as if the rumours of infidelity were just that, rumours. After a series of grand gestures and public apologies they reconciled.
I’ve often thought maybe Cardi and Offset thrive on chaos? Some couples love to fight and make up. But then in 2020, we saw a different side of the couple. Quarantine was looking really good on them. They showered each other with gifts and compliments on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Together, they threw their baby girl Kulture a “litty” birthday party in July. Just a month ago Offset was telling us to go support his “wife” when “WAP” was released. And there was no shortage of PDA postings all summer long. They look happy in every post!
Of course, we only view their relationship through the curated lens of social media but according to what sources have told E! News, their friends and family are shocked by the news. They’ve been living together and apparently seemed to be doing fine. But, and it’s a big but… the cheating rumours have not stopped. E! is reporting that Offset’s been pleading with her to believe he’s been faithful, but as much as Cardi’s tried to forgive him for the past, girls keep coming forward with new claims and she’s had enough. Who can blame her.
A lot of people have dragged Cardi online for years because she stayed with Offset through, not one, not two, but seemingly countless indiscretions. At times, I’ve been one of those people, but I’ve got to give her credit for making the decision at her own pace, because it’s her life. Late last year she opened up to Vogue about why she’s reconciled with Offset in the past.
“…a lot of people were so mad at me; a lot of women felt disappointed in me. But it’s real-life sh-t. If you love somebody and you stop being with them, and you’re depressed and social media is telling you not to talk to that person because he cheated, you’re not really happy on the inside until you have the conversation. Then, if you get back with them, it’s like, how could you? You let all of us down. People that be in marriages for years, when they say till death do us part, they not talking about little arguments like if you leave the fridge open. That’s including everything.”
It makes you wonder what’s different this time around? At this point they’ve been through so much that I don’t think their divorce will get messy. Just a day before Cardi filed the papers in Atlanta, the couple were spotted leaving an office building in Beverly Hills. Does that mean Offset was blindsided by her decision to pull the trigger, or does it mean they’re already meeting with lawyers to get this tidied up quickly? Both have yet to comment of the news, but I could also totally see them reconciling in the new year. Drama can result in great art and Cardi’s working on her sophomore album. By the sounds of her life, this next record could be her Lemonade.
