Last year around this time, Cate Blanchett was campaigning for her third Oscar as Lydia Tár. It was between her and Michelle Yeoh and it was a tight race. Michelle won the SAG but Cate won the BAFTA, Critics Choice, the Gotham, and several more. It was Michelle in the end, but it had to have been close because Cate’s performance was astounding and because of how revered she is among her peers. Like almost at the level of Daniel Day-Lewis and Meryl Streep.
Cate isn’t contending this award season but she is, obviously, a voter and she’s engaged in the whole awards machinery. We saw it last year not only with her own nomination, but in how she threw down for Andrea Riseborough, famously shouting out Andrea’s performance in To Leslie while onstage accepting her Critics Choice win for Best Actress. Who, then, will Cate be voting for as an Academy member this year?
My guess would be Lily Gladstone. She was on the Killers of the Flower Moon train pretty early, like from Cannes. And in December hosted a screening and Q&A afterwards with Lily and Leonardo DiCaprio:
Cate’s ties with Leo and Scorsese are strong and now that connection might be benefitting Lily’s campaign.
As for her own work, it was relatively quiet for Cate in 2023 with high profile releases but this year we should be hearing a lot more from her. The long-awaited Borderlands is due out in August. This is the movie adaptation of the video game, directed by Eli Roth, and they completed principle photographed like two years ago, returning for reshoots last January, and we still haven’t seen a trailer so there’s been some online speculation among the gamers who have been looking forward to this. I know nothing about gaming so my primary interest here is Cate because this isn’t the kind of project we usually associate her with – and yet…she was so f-cking good as Hela in Thor so I kinda love that that wasn’t a one-off and that the Great Cate Blanchett isn’t above signing on to an intergalactic fantasy video game joint. And certainly not when she can balance it with her standard prestige work.
That’s the other release that’s expected in 2024 – a limited television series called Disclaimer, directed by Alfonso Cuarón, also highly anticipated. It’s about an acclaimed journalist who finds out that she’s been fictionalised in a novel that exposes a secret she’s been keeping, seven episodes, and reportedly shot over nine months, and she said that each episode in and of itself felt like it was its own film. So, with the talent involved (Hoyeon, Kevin Kline, Sacha Baron Cohen, Lesley Manville, Kodi Smit-McPhee) and Alfonso Cuarón’s first project since Roma, obviously this is going to be a major release for Apple.
So here’s Cate in Australia today in head to toe Stella McCartney, I love this fit. And she’s worn it before, at the Stella McCartney show back in October. My point is, what would be a LOOK for the rest of us, this is just a casual day for Cate Blanchett. No makeup, hair not done, her version of athleisure, lol.
