Mike White told the actors cast as the family in The White Lotus to watch Southern Charm for research. That tracks as Mike has worked in reality TV (he was on Survivor) so of course he appreciates the genre. And the three women, wow. It’s like watching a Real Housewives alliance fall apart.
The cooing surface “women supporting women” compliments that are seething with resentment. The subtle one-upmanship with their “problems” that are really a way for them to brag, it’s masterful.
Speaking of The White Lotus, if I were to tell you that one of the cast members has a product line with Architectural Digest, who would you think of? There is no way people will get it right on the first guess.
Last week, Lainey answered a question The Squawk about the It Ends With Us accusations, specifically about how unusual it is for an actor to have significant input in their wardrobe or make script changes (my takeaway is that it’s not all that unusual). Lainey also hones in on the edit, because it is unusual to have actors be involved in that process.
It made me think of another actor who has a reputation for being overly involved in projects: Edward Norton. American History X cemented him as a thinking person’s movie star (not a screen idol like Leo or Brad, but not Daniel Day-Lewis either, kind of right in the middle). He dated Salma Hayek and Courtney Love but didn’t love the press; he was private. Then The Hulk happened and he got a reputation for being difficult. So much so, I think it stalled his career, which was unusual for someone who had already “made it.” It wasn’t that he was an asshole, it was that he was viewed as a pain in the ass. Big difference. This was before social media, so he didn’t have his every breath dissected on TikTok and he wasn’t in the press a lot, so the circumstances are different. Today, I don’t know if he works when he wants to or works when can, but at press events for A Complete Unknown, he seems relaxed and there have been no whispers of any issues. I wonder if he’s changed, the industry has changed or if it was a Marvel-specific experience for The Hulk.
I had to rewatch a few times but that’s Timothy Olyphant in the new Beyoncé’s Levi’s commercial, right? He has the ideal career: great projects, famous enough to get a table at a restaurant but not famous enough to get chased by paps. The Goldilocks of fame.
Hilary Baldwin, who was around 28 when she got married, “didn’t understand” what a prenup was but signed it anyway. How does an adult not understand at least the concept of a prenup? They have prenups in Spain.
Here is The White Lotus's Carrie Coon at the Independent Spirit Awards on the weekend.
