I once read a story (Tweet? Caption? Post? I don’t remember exactly) that called Kermit the Frog the original hipster and I think about it often. This reminded me of that. 

 

Nicole Kidman is partnering on a CBD skin care line. This seems way out of Nicole’s comfort zone as she usually isn’t about the hard sell or lifestyle play. I actually know very little about Nicole Kidman’s life (like where she lives or her daughters’ names) but, and maybe this is just me, it seems that the more TV she’s done (like Big Little Lies and The Undoing) the more accessible she’s become.

Must read for today: The Hollywood Reporter’s deep dive into Johnny Depp’s “self-made implosion.” I have not read it yet but here’s what I wonder about Johnny: he’s from a generation of stars like Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Robert Downey Jr., Tom Cruise, Halle Berry, and Keanu Reeves (they are all around the same age, with a 5 year range) and for so long he was the one who didn’t do the talk shows, didn’t court fame, didn’t campaign for awards, didn’t go “Hollywood” (which was a ruse as he is probably the most entrenched in LA out of all of them) – at some point that kind of fame has to be reckoned with, it has to be processed because it’s a huge thing to deal with on a day-to-day basis. How did Johnny process it besides joining a rock band and buying expensive things?

 

Lourdes Leon for Juicy Couture, right? If this was any other celebrity’s daughter it would be plastered all over her Instagram, but Lourdes doesn’t have a public Instagram. They didn’t even mention her name in the ad, that’s how little she cares about courting us and I love her for just that reason.

Selena Gomez is working with Steve Martin and Martin Short on a comedy for Hulu (this better come to Canada – we should at least get dibs on all of Martin Short’s work). If you are looking for a show to watch, I’d highly recommend Martin Short on Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. Jerry Seinfeld is an incredibly condescending person in general but Martin is a hilarious delight, even when he’s insulting people. Especially when he’s insulting people. 

Have you watched The Queen’s Gambit? I did and enjoyed it, but I also enjoyed this New Yorker story on the “fatal flaw” of the series: Beth Harmon is too beautiful. Sarah Miller writes, “Actors Are Too Hot Hill is a silly place to die, yet the acclaim for “The Queen’s Gambit” series, which stars an actual former model, has stranded me there, unable to descend until I have said my piece. Allow me to shout from my lone perch at its summit that Beth Harmon is not pretty, and there is no story about her that can be told if she is.”
