So Katy Perry’s single has been torched by critics, which was expected. There are a couple of things happening here, I think: the march of time on pop stars, which we’ve talked about time and again. And the comfort of which critics feel that, like Justin Timberlake, it’s safe to give their honest opinion. That doesn’t happen with every artist because of the power imbalance and fandoms.
As for Katy, I think what’s building here is that “Woman’s World” is not received well because the intent was satire. That’s an extremely tricky genre to pull off but some artists, like Eminem, have done it.
This morning, Lainey wrote about Shannen Doherty, a seminal bad bitch brunette. What Lainey captured was how hot the show was and how much fire she had – and what kind of problems that heat can bring in Hollywood. Attention can turn negative very quickly, especially for unprotected young stars.
I was obsessed with Beverly Hills 90210, next level invested. And once Shannen left, that obsession immediately dissolved into apathy. Who was Dylan without Brenda? I wasn’t that interested in finding out. Maybe it was puberty that turned me so hot and cold, but I really think it was her.
For me, and I know this is a minority opinion, Odell Beckham Jr. is Kordell’s brother—not the other way around. I’m speaking of course about Love Island, which is moving at a brisk pace and over soon (????). Of course I’m being over-the-top because Odell has been famous in sports for a long time and Kordell has been famous for five minutes but it must be a trip to be in a famous sibling’s shadow for decades and now be famous yourself – but you are quarantined and don’t know it. This show is bonkers.
Last Friday, I had a little blurb about Richard Simmons but wanted to save it for today. It was his birthday and PEOPLE had a story up about his birthday and at the time, I wrote that it’s nice to hear from Richard on his terms. There are celebrities who can be nice and there are celebrities who claim to be kind and Richard was both. A bursting ball of sunshine who was good to people at a time when it was considered radical to show empathy and vulnerability, particularly for a man on TV.
Is David Beckham’s relationship cooling? I don’t mean with his wife Victoria (they are SOLID) but with his business partner David Gardner. He has been DB’s long-time right hand, traveling with him and, pre-Covid, partying with him quite a bit. They were attached at the hip for years. Gardner has a very wide social circle (and two children with Liv Tyler, they split but are on good terms) and is also heavily involved in Inter Miami. It’s unusual for both of them to go months without posting together.
