The entire It Ends With Us promo is being built around Blake Lively’s personality and for this point in time in her career, when she has SO much internet popularity, it’s a strategic decision.

And like all of her and Ryan Reynolds’s promotional work, it’s made to not look strategic.

Speaking of Ryan Reynolds, allow me to be messy for one quick minute. He was married to Scarlett Johansson and their divorce was pretty low key – not “we’re best friends!” but also no drawn out fight. Seems neutral and in gossip terms, ancient history. But now they are both in the MCU and sometimes that job has contractually obligated group hangs. I don’t know if they’ve been in the same space in years, I can’t really think of any events where they would cross over. Blake and Scarlett were both at the 2018 MET Gala. Their dress colours were quite similar actually (you can see Blake here and Scarlett here). Ryan jokes about everything, but never his first marriage.

Are pickles in? Demi Lovato named her latest baby Pickle and I’ve noticed that pickle toys are really popular right now (maybe that’s because I bought the squeaky pickles for my dog nephews, who are both absolute buttheads). And then Selena Gomez’s shirt. I’m seeing pickles everywhere!

Oprah’s comments have been off since the weight loss conversation hit a frenzy and I get it: no one is required to take abuse on the internet, regardless of their status. Her account, her prerogative. What puts her in a unique position is that, for decades, she has been about the hard conversation. That conversation can’t be had on social media because it devolves so quickly. So it creates a wall, which is kind of the worst of both worlds – everyone is talking, no one is listening.

Anyway, she is sharing an interview clip with Melinda French Gates, who is turning 60. Melinda now has a talk show on YouTube. And not to “who cares” because I hate when people say it about celebrity gossip, but I do need to ask who this conversation is for. Sure, billionaires have problems (did Succession teach us nothing?) but the journey here is… not compelling. What Melinda gets to experience at 60 with mega wealth and mega access to literally everything, is not the moment. Billionaires are not the moment. It’s not enough for them to be rich, they want to be liked. We see it over and over again. None of them can accept that billionaires are not cool. You can buy a YouTube series, you can buy views, but you can’t buy people’s genuine attention. A run-of-the-mill one season Housewife is more relevant in pop culture than Melinda Gates.
