The Actresses and the fashion houses at the Gothams
As we saw with every other acting category, almost every actress in contention for the five best actress Oscar nominations was in attendance at the Gothams last night. Because it’s looking pretty competitive between several of them for what’s most likely the two final spots.
Chase Infiniti, the breakout star of One Battle After Another, might be on the bubble. She was in custom Louis Vuitton for the night, it’s not my favourite out of all the bangers we’ve seen from her lately but I do like the range, a shape we haven’t really been able to enjoy on her.

In addition to Chase, Rose Byrne and Amanda Seyfried have both been campaigning for their performances in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You and The Testament of Ann Lee respectively. Between all three, Rose has been at it the longest since her film debuted at Sundance and she made such an impact that she remains in the conversation after almost a year. She too, like Chase, was in custom LV.

Amanda meanwhile, in a rather unremarkable Valentino, has been riding solid momentum since Venice, and she’ll likely get a boost from The Housemaid in a few weeks when it opens for the holiday box office. This is a very popular book, it has a built-in fanbase, and early screenings have been really, really positive.
Jennifer Lawrence (Die My Love) ranks behind all of them on the prediction lists but isn’t out of it yet. And clearly her campaign doesn’t think so since she’s making an appearance. Her best friend, Emma Stone, was not at the Gothams but was occupying the fourth spot on prediction lists for a while until recently.
JLaw and Emma are previous winners, though, and it’s established that the Academy favours them which is one of the big reasons why they’re both still possibilities. Jennifer, as expected, is wearing Dior – a really great Dior fitted jacket and skirt by Jonathan Anderson.

Out of all of the women featured in this post, Tessa Thompson is probably the biggest longshot and I hate it here. Because she is so f-cking good in Hedda, available to stream right now on Prime Video, I’m annoyed at the fact that not enough people are talking about her. As Sarah wrote in her review of the film, Tessa is deliciously c-nty in her performance, unapologetically irredeemable, but also deeply, deeply human. More people need to see this movie! Tessa is wearing Schiaparelli.

And then there’s Kate Hudson. As noted a few weeks ago, Kate’s contention for a best actress nomination has, at times, felt like an industry plant, LOL. Hugh Jackman is the main cheerleader right now. Last night, while they were accepting their tribute award at the Gothams, he predicted she would win the Oscar.
He said that with Jessie Buckley in the room, considered by many to be the frontrunner. But, again, that’s how the campaign for Kate has been going the last couple of months – and those strategists are doing their jobs. This is what they’re supposed to do, if the buzz is there they have to amplify it, if it’s not there they have to manufacture it.
In addition to Jessie Buckley, the three presumed nominees, according to the pundits, for best actress nominations are Renate Reinsve and Cynthia Erivo (not present). Renate has been killingggggg it with every appearance, doing for Louis Vuitton what others haven’t been able to. This is one of the best red dresses of the year.

As for Jessie, she was one of several women in Chanel last night – the new Chanel, by Mathieu Blazy. We saw Teyana Taylor in that feathered skirt earlier, and here’s Jessie also straight from the runway.

Also our first look at Kristen Stewart in Chanel by Blazy. It suits her so well but more importantly, it shows you how popular Mathieu’s first collection has been with the fashion and celebrity style community. Perhaps because of the range. Teyana, Jessie, and Kristen are all wearing outfits that are matched perfectly to them, as is Riley Keogh.

Chanel’s Métiers d’Art collection will be presented tonight in New York. More Chanel options for award season incoming.
