The Odyssey in China
Earlier this week, I posted about Christopher Nolan’s popularity in China. Even though his films often feature an ensemble of A-listers, including The Odyssey, for a large segment of the Chinese audience, he’s the actual superstar. Which is why almost all IMAX screens in China will be screening The Odyssey when the movie opens there in two weeks…after Spider-Man: Brand New Day. This is interesting for industry nerds paying attention to IMAX bookings because The Odyssey is actually dominating IMAX screens in the west, meaning that in the United States, for example, very few people can see Spider-Man in IMAX. And it’s still going to do crazy numbers. But in China, this makes Spider-Man a more exclusive experience in IMAX and it’s already projected to bring in $250 million from that territory alone by the end of the theatrical run.
Now back to The Odyssey – the worldwide box office is currently sitting at around $750 million without China. Starting August 14, almost every IMAX screen in China will be playing Nolan’s film, because the demand is there, which tells you about his popularity, notable because Chinese audiences aren’t always receptive to Hollywood filmmakers. And it’s not like geopolitical relations are great between China and the United States. But Nolan films are apparently immune to trade wars. The East Asian box office will easily push The Odyssey total over a billion worldwide, it’s just a matter of how far over a billion they can reach and clearly they’re hoping for whatever they can get from the Chinese market, leaning on Nolan’s appeal.
Nolan is well aware of this. He and Emma Thomas were in Beijing last night, alongside Matt Damon and Charlize Theron, and since it was his birthday, the crowd sang to him in Mandarin.
Emma, Matt, and Charlize also personally surprised him with a cake during one of the photo calls. You can see it in the carousel below.
I almost missed the cake, because I was too focused on Charlize’s shorts. Charlize’s looks in China have been 特别好, or particularly good, starting with this Lanvin set, the blouse top over the shorts and the black bow around the back of the neck and falling down her back. Also the shoes are insane.
From there it was Givenchy – a dramatic dress highlighted by a billowing but structured skirt and she obviously knows how to sell it. Who do you think edits her reels?
And finally, Louis Vuitton as the showstopper. A dress of chains over what looks like a black bodysuit, Louis Vuitton. It’s unreal when she’s moving.
OK but even when she’s not moving it’s a f-cking moment. Big ups to her stylist, Leslie Fremar, because they went to China and served the sh-t out this meal.
Unfortunately our agencies don't have any photos from The Odyssey in China, so please enjoy all the social media included in this post.
