Taylor: A necklace and a dress
Taylor Swift was a four-segment guest on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last night, not a surprise. The way it used to work, and pretty much still does, on late night talk shows is that only the mega A-list stars take up three or four blocks, if they’re willing to stay. Back in the day, with David Letterman especially, you would know his regard for a certain guest by how much time he spent with them. The Julia Roberts, George Clooneys, Tom Hanks etc would all stick around for three segments. Doesn’t get bigger than Taylor Swift so they would have had her for the whole hour if she was up for it.
Taylor’s The Eras Tour final show and docuseries premieres on Disney+ tomorrow so she’s on a bit of a mini press tour. A couple of months ago, when The Life of a Showgirl dropped, she was at The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. This time it’s Colbert and It’s been four years or so since she last visited… and this might be her last because The Late Show is ending in May, a topic that came up several times during the interview. At one point he asked her for her advice on what to do with himself when he no longer will have to be on television every night, comparing it to what it was like for her when her tour wrapped up. Made me wonder what that final week or weeks will look like next year because there is no way they’ll ho-hum just call it a day without all kinds of spectacle and a superstar guest list. Letterman for sure, right? And a whole lineup of other friends of the show, perhaps a few taped segments – and since I work in television myself, I’m sure a few of those asks have already gone out. If I was one of the show producers last night, I would have started the legwork with Taylor too, or at least take her temperature about possibly doing something. It’s unlikely that they’ve been able to secure a commitment but my point is that I can’t imagine they wouldn’t go for it, although they’ve already burned through the “Hey Stephen” idea.
You know who I’d love to see? The Late Show is ending in May, and in May 2019, BTS made their first appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in a tribute to The Beatles because at the time, they’d just become the only group since The Beatles to have three straight albums debut at the top of the Billboard 200. Also, The Beatles made their American television debut on The Ed Sullivan Show at the Ed Sullivan Theater in 1964. That’s why the performance was shot in black and white, with RM, Jin, Suga, j-hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook dressed like The Beatles as Stephen introduced them by imitating Ed Sullivan.
The BTS comeback is happening in the spring. The timing seems kinda perfect for them to make an appearance when The Late Show is signing off. If the producers haven’t already, they should be getting on this too.
Back to Taylor though – she was cute and verbose during the interview, and already there are thousands of headlines about her calling Travis Kelce the “love of my life” and talking about her cats and having a hard time ranking the top five songs in her catalogue. But I’m here for the fashion because it was a great outfit. Burgundy velvet, perfect for the season, and matching red velvet pumps. I normally don’t f-ck with Taylor's shoe taste but these are beauties.
You know what overshadowed the dress for me though? And I’m not usually that girl who notices jewellery but that necklace is unreal. The way it sparkled and seemed to dance on her collarbone, OMG, it is spectacular.
