Cynthia and Ariana: High fashion and all the feels

It feels like the return of a friend. One of the biggest pop culture stories of 2024 was the Wicked press tour last fall and through the winter, when Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande took over the timeline in green and pink and, together, created some of the most insane viral moments to save us from despair. There were some people out there who thought they were doing too much, but I’m proud to say that was never me. Theatre kids should be theatre kids, doing too much is their factory setting. 

We’re now just ten days out from Wicked: For Good, and Cynthia and Ari reuniting for promotion, which basically means the two of them clinging to each other for dear life and a lot of tears. This is what I missed and this is what I’m so happy to see again – the sight of these two women dialing it up to the highest level of emotion, feeling allllll the feels, no matter what the occasion. Celine Dion would be very proud. 

The latest occasion is the news that they’ve been nominated together for a Grammy. It’s the reaction that’s sending me. Ariana dramatically dropping to her knees, and Cynthia overcome, gasping in disbelief and gratitude. Gasping is a hallmark of the theatre children. They will gasp at anything – from blueberries being on sale to the arrival of a text message from someone who texts them every single day. This is basically Duana at brunch finding out that the weekend special is eggs benedict. 

A Grammy nomination, obviously, is way more special than eggs benedict served on Sundays. But my point is that when it comes to Cynthia, Ariana, Duana, and theatre kids, it’s hard to distinguish between Grammys and eggs benedict. And I’m not complaining! It is batsh-t insane and beautiful! Their lives are never dull – and they make our lives never dull when we are around them!

Also, the fashion. The fashion is definitely not f-cking dull. Not when Cynthia and Ariana are working with two top tier stylists in Jason Bolden and Law Roach. Cynthia in Dior and leather and today in an embroidered denim set has been astonishing. 

And Law going into the archives, his specialty, for Ari with Givenchy by Lee McQueen was inspired. 

But also, she wore the Emerald City. COME ON. 

The London premiere is tonight. I’m not sure if we’re ready. And remember, we are hopefully getting months and months of this because Wicked: For Good intends to contend for Oscars and both Cynthia and Ariana are considered good bets for nominations in the lead and supporting actress categories. Ariana might actually be the frontrunner right now. And if anyone understands how to style for this moment, it’s Law Roach.
