Dear Gossips,

David Beckham was a featured speaker yesterday at MIP London, a television conference, talking to Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, about his own award-winning docuseries about his life and career and the follow-up which will be focused on Victoria’s.

Beckham, if you recall, came out in the fall of 2023 and was an instant hit, reframing how many people feel about the Beckhams and their controversies. For David it represented a kind of vindication, to revisit some of the criticisms made against him during various times in his career, with the benefit of hindsight, of course, and with cooler emotional temperatures, and be able give dimension and nuance to a situation that was previously lacking. Don’t we all f-cking need some of that now…?

And yet, how goddamn frustrating in the moment. Who, in the moment, would be comforted with the thought that in 20 years people will finally understand? In 20 years their reactions will be different. In 20 years they’ll pause to ask the right questions. No one. This is comforting to no one.

I wonder though if that will be Victoria’s experience when her docuseries comes out, eventually. It went into production last August, much of it will be focused on her label and her work as a designer. And David says that she wasn’t all that interested in doing it – that he was the one who was pushing:

“It took a minute to try and get her to agree with it. It wasn’t something that was easy. I think I’m the only one who could convince her and I did, eventually.”

This, of course, is his production company, so it’s not like he doesn’t have an investment. In fact, he might actually have a bigger investment, considering that he’s the one who has the Emmy for his own doc and has transitioned from playing football to all kinds of other enterprises, one of which now includes film and television production. I’m saying this to head off whatever bullsh-t that will inevitably follow about Victoria’s participation in this series and the gross narrative that she’s always pushing to be in front, so whatever David says about him having to “convince” her might not be true.

But he's the one out here at these conventions selling the content. This isn’t about him fulfilling her whims and powerless to her demands. In this case, he’s the power and she’s the asset. David Beckham is at MIP, where television executives make deals and create anticipation for their upcoming shows, doing publicity for the star of his next project. This is how the Beckham brand has evolved.

The Beckhams celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary last summer. How many times, though, has it been reported that they were divorcing? How many times has that turned out to be wrong? All of the times, obviously. What must it have been like to be in bed together while reading in the paper that your marriage was over? Did they at any point say to themselves… in 20 years we can “ha ha ha” in their faces?! God if I were them I would be “ha ha ha”-ing every day. I’d post screenshots on Instagram and tag the tabloids and be like… remember when you were wrong? Doing it in a docuseries is almost too f-cking subtle, LOL.

Here's David Beckham the other day in Fort Lauderdale for a match between Inter Miami CF and New York City FC.

Yours in gossip,

Lainey
