Dream casting the Britney movie
We know that the film adaptation of Britney Spears’ memoir, The Woman in Me, is going to be made by Jon M. Chu and will be released by Universal. At some point in time, there will be a Britney movie. Which means someone needs to play Britney. Sydney Sweeney seems like the fan favorite pick to play Brit right now, but I just can’t see past Sabrina Carpenter, a fellow Disney kid turned popstar, standing right there.
I was thinking about this after seeing photos of Sabrina in New York, performing on her Short N’ Sweet tour, and then later out for lunch, dressed down in…jorts.
Please excuse me while I process Gen Z bringing back JORTS.
Okay, now that—jorts, REALLY?—that’s over, I was thinking about Sabrina-as-Britney because she has a similar duality. She can be sweet, she can be sassy, she can be sexy, she can be vulnerable. And she can sing, and she can dance, really, why are we talking about anyone else playing Britney Spears?
And if we’re going to make a movie about Britney, which will presumably be set largely in the Nineties/2000s, then perhaps we will also see a version of Beyoncé? They came up at the same time, albeit on different paths. But if you’re making a movie now about Britney then, would you be able to resist casting a version of Beyoncé for then given what we know of her now? And if you are going to cast Beyoncé, which I’m not saying they will, but maybe, even just for a cameo, wouldn’t you get Zendaya to do it? Who else could? It’s a match made in pop culture heaven, with the bonus that Zendaya can act and would do Queen Bey justice.
Here is Zendaya in Los Angeles, on the same day Sabrina was in New York, except Zendaya isn’t wearing motherf-cking JORTS. Point to Zendaya, sorry Sabrina.
