A few weeks ago, I think it was a joint interview with Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder, campaigning for the Emmys for The Curse, when Nathan called her Emily or something and then everyone remembered that her real name is in fact Emily but she had to change it because there was already an Emily Stone registered with the Screen Actors Guild. This prompted everyone to wonder whether or not we should be calling her Emily instead of her stage name Emma and now that she’s on the press tour for Kinds of Kindness, she’s clarifying that it doesn’t really matter, you can call her Emma or Emily.

I’m not The Name Therapist, Duana, but I want to weigh in on this. And my thinking is that since I don’t know her, I’m not her friend, I’m not a part of her life, and I only engage with her as an actor and a celebrity, I’m calling her Emma. The idea of calling her Emily, for me personally, is cringe. Like, let’s say I interview her, and I walk into the junket and greet her all, “Hi Emily!”, it would feel to me like there’s a forced level of familiarity. And I’m not trying to be her friend. I would not want to give the appearance that I’m out here all desperado to be her friend.

Anyway, Emma was on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last night when he asked her about the dance scene in the Kinds of Kindness trailer that went viral after it was released.

She told Jimmy that she was just f-cking around on the set of Poor Things and director Yorgos Lanthimos saw it and told her it would work for their next film. And then they played it on the show:

First of all, this is great promo. At this point in her career, and she’s been doing this for years, now a double Oscar winner, she knows good promo. She and Ryan Gosling, a good friend, have this in common and it’s similar energy the way both of them manage their public and private performances.

But second…

Do you know what I’m seeing here? K-pop. And I’m confident in this observation because it was over eight years ago that Emma was on Conan and revealed that she’s obsessed with K-pop. Have you seen this? This was back in 2015 and K-pop was already popping then, but this is still wayyyyy before western mainstream.

Emma was namechecking 2NE1 and Girls Generation. She would then go on to be the host of SNL when BTS was the musical guest. So my point is… if Emma Stone knows K-pop, and she clearly does, then she must know K-pop choreography. And, maybe, like so many of us, even practise it in private. Those moves are giving K-pop, 100%. This is what I would ask her and I wish I had the opportunity. Please don’t steal my question.

Here’s Emma with the Kinds of Kindness team in New York yesterday. She looks really good in that dress.
