Fashion Misses at the Globes
Before we get into some of the style disappointments from last night, a quick word on the DJ. Not all of the production elements worked at the Golden Globes this year – the GPS thing was dumb, some of the technical transitions were clunky, the lighting was terrible at times.
But the DJ was not the problem. In fact, so many of the song choices during the presenter introductions were excellent: “Return of the Mack” for Macaulay Culkin, “APT.” for Judd Apatow, and “Like Jennie” for Jennifer Lopez was solid too.

Her whole look, unfortunately, was a bust. I understand why she chose this dress, it’s well within her wheelhouse, and it shows off that crazy ass body, a body we’ve been admiring for almost 30 YEARS. Seriously, 2027 will mark the 30th anniversary of Selena. It seems almost impossible that she’s been famous for this long and, well, consistently looks the way she does. In sooooo many dresses, dress after dress after dress.
Duana made this point on our post-Globes group call last night: that when the body is such a constant, and clothing it is so constant, and the aesthetic is so constant, is it a higher degree of difficulty to keep it fresh? Probably. But this is one of the uglier pieces we’ve seen her in.
And the hair and makeup didn’t help. Maybe it’s just me with the chignon, never been a fan, but I really hate how it’s positioned – when she’s photographed from the front it comes to a point, turning her head into a cone shape, doing nothing for her face. And speaking of her face… the contouring is … not my thing. You can actually see a clear difference between the top of her forehead, and how dark it is, and how much lighter the space is just above her eyebrows because it doesn’t seem like it’s been blended properly?

Wasn't just the angle or the lighting on the carpet either, it was the same issue when she presented. And, remember, she would have had a touch-up before she went on stage. The combination of the makeup and the tone of the dress is stealing that famous glow.
JLo wasn’t the only pop girl who underwhelmed at the Globes. Ariana Grande also came out flat. And it’s not like I haven’t enjoyed Ari + Law Roach, in fact it’s the opposite. The looks on the Wicked: For Good press tour were so good so there was a lot of anticipation for whatever they’d bring to the Globes. This is custom Vivienne Westwood and… it’s fine?
Ariana is either Glinda or Audrey Hepburn, but this look is neither. Maybe on someone else, the elements of the design would come through more – the structure and the shape – because I can see how pretty the skirt is, but I don’t know that she’s the right person to showcase it because it all seems to overwhelm her, especially since her hair is dark now, and with the dress so dark, and the nude lip too… nothing is popping.
Aimee Lou Wood was also in a similar Vivienne Westwood silhouette, and the two dresses are similar, both in design but also impact. As in … not giving.
Mila Kunis in Carolina Herrera wasn’t giving either. I know this is a classic Carolina Herrera and on the runway it was slightly more interesting because the model accentuated the pockets. On the carpet, though, on Mila, there wasn’t much to be excited about – not the pattern or the colours, it’s basically a strapless ballgown, the end.

We’ve seen Elle Fanning in a variety of classic ballgowns over the years and she did not wear one of those last night but I’m also not all that jacked up about this Gucci…because I feel like we’ve seen it before, and on her too. Obviously the gown is exquisitely made, it fits her perfectly, but this isn’t a swing, not for her. And for someone who some consider to be a fashion girl, if I can’t tell if this is old or new, to me it doesn’t meet the criteria of the best.
Speaking of not being able to tell if the look from a prior appearance or if it’s current – Amal Clooney in red Balmain. She’s beautiful, she doesn’t ever flop. But this could have been 2016, if you told me that I wouldn’t have challenged you.
As for Zoë Kravitz, I feel like she was leaning in on the 90s with this slip dress, not mad at it, and I appreciated the departure from her usual black. No surprise, she’s in Saint Laurent here, but that’s also what’s a bit deflating. Because it’s one thing if it’s a thrift – like Drew Barrymore in 1995, layering two thrift slip dresses for a look that became iconic – but when it’s brand new, from a luxury house, and it looks thrifty, it loses the appeal.
And finally, the star who generated the most mentions at the Globes last night – which at this point should not be a surprise: Lalisa in two outfits. Loooooooved her in sheer black Jacquemus during arrivals. And by convention, the carpet dress, the first dress, is always the one that makes it rain. Which is 100% the case here. The neckpiece, the drop-waist, the hair is insane, like she had it in braids two days ago, fell asleep on the beach, then basically did nothing with it, the texture is SO hard to achieve. And the makeup, dewy and peachy and juicy… I’m all over it.
So why is she on this list? Because of the change for the actual show – this is what she wore to present and it’s … just another metallic dress to me. I hate the transition from top to bottom. I’m not entirely sure it fits right but it lacks the general sexy, slouchy, effortless vibe of the first look. So, yes, it’s definitely the #2, that was the correct call, I just don’t know why it had to be made at all.
