Greta Lee’s A.I. Double
This post contains spoilers for season four of The Morning Show…
Greta Lee is currently starring in a movie, Tron: Ares, in which she, a human, interacts with an A.I., played by Jared Leto, who is gaining sentience and does not become malevolent. Greta Lee is also currently starring in a television series, The Morning Show, in which she interacts with A.I. that turns against her – and it’s her own A.I. This happens in the most recent episode of TMS which, for me, was triggering AF, although Greta’s performance, as usual, is magnificent. She goes out in a blaze… of controversy.
Briefly – Greta’s character, Stella, has invested heavily in A.I. for UBN’s upcoming Paris Olympics coverage, only the technology is far from ready. But she and Celine have to present their big plans at a conference. The A.I. is supposed to translate what the anchors are saying into any language necessary but it’s not ready to launch. Stella is so desperate to dazzle the audience that she ends up using a version of the program based on her own likeness and initially she pulls it off. But then a reporter throws a curveball…
And Stella’s A.I. spews out all the hateful, horrible things she’d said to herself. Basically Stella’s A.I. told on Stella, exposing her internalised racism, misogyny, and the fact that she was f-cking her rival’s husband. It’s the latest batsh-t development on a show that is addictively batsh-t. But for me, someone who like Stella was born in North America to Asian parents, it was also too f-cking real; a reminder of the devastating consequences that result when you play for the coloniser and betray yourself. Because when you allow yourself to be seduced by systems that uphold the status quo, seeking acceptance, validation, and advancement by their standards on your terms, you will always be the final victim.
Stella sold out, she backstabbed her friends instead of leveraging her power to create more space for women and people of colour. And in the end what brought her down was her own voice narrating a list of her crimes to reveal the truth of white supremacy: it will ultimately never benefit anything but whiteness. Stella had to learn this lesson in the most public and humiliating way. But I can imagine many of us who’ve also been shaped by colonisation have, in our own experience, had to confront the versions of ourselves that are our own worst enemy. And for those who haven’t had that their come to A.I. Jesus moment yet, I wonder whether or not that episode and that scene will have an impact.
So that’s how Stella lit herself on fire and exited Greta Lee from The Morning Show (for now). I’m not sad about this because, well, we all know that the next time Greta is on a TV series she should be one of the leads and not a supporting character. The performance she gave in this episode slammed that point home.
Here’s Greta at the Academy Museum gala last weekend in custom Dior by Jonathan Anderson. She is, as already noted, the first Dior ambassador named under his tenure. And no one wears him better.
