Cailee Spaeny was seen in New York yesterday on the set of Deep Cuts, the film adaptation of Canadian author Holly Brickley’s bestselling book. It’s a good, quick read – about two people who are brought together and then torn apart by music. This is a classic soundtrack friend and love story, cinematic from the first page.

Initially Saoirse Ronan and Austin Butler were supposed to star in the film, playing the lead characters, Percy and Joe. And Odessa A’zion was confirmed as Zoe Gutierrez which was criticised for whitewashing a Latina character. Odessa dropped out and Ariela Barer is now in the role. Saoirse dropped out too for scheduling reasons and Austin’s now working on Miami Vice ’85 so the movie was recast with Cailee Spaeny and Drew Starkey… who are now dating IRL.

There were rumours about this happening for a while, they’ve been spotted in Venice and London but nothing definitive until last week… confirmation that they are definitely a thing outside of the movie.

Deep Cuts went into production in February so it’s likely that they’re close to done and will go into post soon. This is an A24 film, they’ve not yet announced a release date but it should be ready for 2027 and perhaps some kind of festival run, considering director Sean Durkin’s previous features. This is what’s both exciting and tricky about falling in love on set – because Percy and Joe are the nucleus of this story, their artistic collaboration and conflict, and how they communicate through music. So in theory, they should be pretty much together non-stop on the press tour when it comes time to promote. If they’re still dating, they’ll have to deal with questions about their on and offscreen romance. If they’re not dating anymore, that’s a whole other situation. I’m sure marketing team is thrilled about this, LOL.
