Intro for August 13, 2025

Dear Gossips,   

The trailer for Only Murders in the Building season five was released yesterday featuring of course our favourite podcasting trio – Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez – and several Arconia residents, plus a lot of Oscar winners. Double and triple Oscar winners, actually. Meryl Streep has three of them and Diane Wiest and Renée Zellweger have two each, making Christoph Waltz and Da’Vine Randolph and their respective solo Oscars seem kinda measly, ha. 

Seriously, this is a lot of trophies, maybe as many trophies as the number of different coats Mabel wears throughout the season. Because of course that’s another one of the signatures of this show: her coats, her entire wardrobe. Right off the top we see her in a black leather shacket. There’s also a red leather trench. And at one point she’s at a casino in a gold sparkly minidress that’s giving more Selena and less Mabel. 

My favourite part of the trailer is the scene for Duana, The Name Therapist. Charles, Oliver, and Mabel are mixed up with the mob this time and apparently confront the young guns of the family: Tony, Mikey, Vinny, and … Braden. Charles reacted the way Duana would. And I screamed at the way Martin Short reaches over anxiously and touches Steve Martin’s arm. It’s the small details with this show. Tiny reactions or sounds, like the way Martin Short grunts sometimes instead of delivering a line, how Selena’s eyes glaze over whenever the other two go off on their old people sh-t. I looooove this show. And even though I totally agree with Sarah when she’s like, um, how many people are going to die in this building, but at the same time, it’s still so good and so funny, can’t they just keep going? 

Only Murders in the Building season 5 premieres on September 9 with the first three episodes on Hulu and Disney+ in Canada. Perfect timing for me and Sarah, our comfort watch once we wrap up our insane TIFF schedule the second weekend of September.
