Megan Thee Stallion made her Broadway debut last night in Moulin Rouge! The Musical as Zidler, the first female-identifying performer in any production of the show worldwide. It’s an eight-week limited run, amazing that she’s taking on this challenge. Because, of course, Broadway is a specific skillset and that schedule can be intimidating – acting, singing, dancing, eight shows a week, an artistic marathon.

Her presence, however, has given the musical a whole new dimension, incorporating her own hits into the production, reimagined through a character that was already bombastic and larger-than-life.

It’s a particularly timely example of the synergy that can happen between artforms, screen to stage, hip-hop to Broadway – art is increasingly a conversation without walls, a free-flow of imagination that goes in multiple directions… which, ahem, makes a certain comment by a certain actor who seemed to be ranking where an artist showcases their work that much more foolish.

A big night for Megan after what must have been weeks of rehearsal and hard work deserves a celebration and she was photographed leaving the theatre in a gorgeous metallic dress – and on theme with that New York art deco fan pattern – and then later at a bar partying with Queen Latifah and Eboni Nichols. I’m not sure, though, how lit Meg could really get considering that… well… it’s a grind now, and Broadway is all about stamina. I have a few friends who work in theatre and when it’s on, there is very little social life. Every moment not at work is about rest and recovery and protecting any down time you have. This will probably be Meg’s life for the next two months.

Where her personal life is concerned, there are two weeks left in the NBA schedule, the Mavericks this week were eliminated from playoff contention. Sh-tty for the team but that means that Klay Thompson’s off-season begins on April 13 so, presumably, he’ll be in New York to see Megan and watch her perform shortly after that. And if he doesn’t, well then the gossips will definitely be gossiping.
