Dear Gossips,
Three more sleeps…and then it’s Sunday night – and the beginning of the end, the fifth and final season of Insecure. Ahead of the premiere, Yvonne Orji was at the ELLE Women in Hollywood event on Tuesday night and profiled in The New York Times Style Magazine. It’s been a busy year for Yvonne, and not just related to the show that made her a star. Because she also released her memoir/self-help book, Bamboozled by Jesus: How God Tricked Me Into the Life of My Dreams, which I’ve read and love, because she’s a really funny writer, you can hear her saying the words to you, and while I didn’t come out of it committed to God and down with Jesus, it did make me a bigger fan, so I’m excited about what’s next for her, even though I’m in no rush to get to the last episode of Molly’s story.
Insecure was created by Issa Rae but not just as a vehicle for Issa Rae. Like all great storytellers, Issa understands that good story happens when you share – which is why the Molly character is just as central to the show as Issa’s. And why Issa and Molly are the OTP of the series. Whatever will happen between Issa and Lawrence, to me, is secondary to whatever will happen between Issa and Molly.
Yvonne told the NYT that Issa wrote the final episode and when they were shooting it:
“I looked at Issa and said, ‘You wrote the heck out of this episode.’ I knew it even as we were filming.”
So…will Insecure stick the landing?
Issa was on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last night (in a banger of an orange dress!) and they talked about the pressure of concluding the series and how people keep telling her not to “Game of Thrones” it, LOL.
I’m not worried – because she doesn’t seem worried. As she tells Stephen, when she first started making Insecure, she was… well… insecure. And how would she describe herself now?
Capable.
She’s a writer and of all the words she could have chosen, that’s the one she picked: CAPABLE. It’s an underrated attribute. Maybe because it’s a no-frills adjective – capable is solid and dependable, it’s facts, no need for embellishment. Capable is sexy as f-ck. In Issa’s capable hands, Insecure will end in a couple of months. And we’ll be OK.
