Janelle Monae released the video for Pynk yesterday and there’s no mistaking the point: pinkness. Or, rather, PYNKness. Here’s how she described it:
“Pynk is a brash celebration of creation. self love. sexuality. and pussy power! PYNK is the color that unites us all, for pink is the color found in the deepest and darkest nooks and crannies of humans everywhere…PYNK is where the future is born.”
With all that pink in mind, today happens to be the International Day of Pink, calling for “communities across the country, and across the world, (to) unite in celebrating diversity and raising awareness to stop homophobia, transphobia, transmisogyny, and all forms of bullying”.
Perhaps the movement has just found its anthem. Beyond the gorgeousness of the video and the gorgeous of seeing Janelle and Tessa Thompson together and the unapologetic gorgeousness of all that pussy, I love the song. LOVE it. When the pre-chorus kicks in (“so here we are in the car”) and then Grimes comes along for the ride (shout-out to Grimes!), I’m up out of my seat. By the time we get to the end, when she sing-breathes “pink is my favourite part”, I’m practically in tears. Replay, replay, replay all day.
