A celebrity joining Instagram is only newsworthy if the celebrity is a celebrity you weren’t expecting to join Instagram. Jennifer Aniston has said multiple times in the past that she didn’t want to be on social media because she wanted to keep something of herself to herself. But The Morning Show is premiering soon. The Morning Show is Apple’s first major streaming series. And to promote it, as one of the stars and executive producers, Jen has to live where her show lives. She’s joined Instagram. Here’s her first post – a smart one, and a fitting one:
It’s smart because, of course, all six Friends are not often seen all together all at the same time. Fitting because Friends has been streaming on Netflix for a few years, reaching a whole new audience, which has sustained her popularity and her fame with a generation too young to have known Friends when it first aired.
But there were signs that this was going to happen. The junket for The Morning Show happened this past weekend and Jen was asked, since Reese Witherspoon has been on IG for years, whether or not she’d give in. Her response:
"What you resist, persists. It's something that is a part of our world now and it's not going away."
So here we are. One of the remaining celebrity holdouts is holding out no more. And it’s not like there aren’t other big names on Instagram who Jen would consider among her peers: Nicole Kidman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Tom Cruise – even Julia Roberts is on Instagram!
Who’s left then? Who will keep on resisting even if it persists? Angelina Jolie, Sandra Bullock, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp (please God, don’t ever let Johnny Depp be on Twitter or Instagram), Keanu Reeves. If I had to guess, Sandra will probably be next. She’s never been openly against it. If I had to predict, I’m going to say that George Clooney will, eventually. He said he’d never but he also said he’d never get married again so…
As for Jen on Instagram – I think she’ll be good at it. And I wonder if it’ll be almost a relief to be on it because it’s not like she doesn’t know it. When she and Justin Theroux first announced their divorce, she was showing up a lot on her friends’ IGs as a way of letting people know she wasn’t bothered. So she’s already been using it indirectly. Now it’s straight up hers. And we’re already learning a lot from who she’s following.
First person she followed was Courteney Cox. Makes sense. Chelsea Handler made the top five so that answers the question of whether or not they’re still close, since there have been rumours about whether or not they broke up. She’s also following Justin Theroux, perhaps to get ahead of the inevitable speculation if she hadn’t followed him. He’s not following her back though, probably because he’s yet to figure out that she’s on there. I doubt he would have been given the heads up. By the end of the day, though, probably, she’ll get a follow back. He can be counted on for the thirst.
