Jessie, Hamnet, and the Lead Actresses
Sarah has written today about One Battle After Another and how it is now, unquestionably, the frontrunner for Best Picture at the Oscars over Sinners which will likely get many, many nominations but few if any wins. We’ve been anxious about this for months, but this cannot be a surprise for people who’ve been paying attention.
The Hamnet team, though, was very surprised when they won the Globe for Best Motion Picture – Drama last night. I just saw Hamnet this weekend and even though it came with a “you will cry so much” warning from pretty much all of my industry peers and friends who’ve seen it, I still sobbed through the last 15 minutes, and the credits, and kept crying on the subway on the way home.
The film is devastating and beautiful and … I love it. And with the backing of Steven Spielberg, who is a producer on the film, maybe One Battle After Another won’t run away with the Oscar. Because Spielberg is super influential within the Academy and capable of bringing in votes. He knew exactly what he was doing on that stage, speaking before Chloe Zhao, and speaking to the Academy members who would have been watching, teeing up the situation perfectly for her to come in and nail that speech about vulnerability and being seen. Remember, she is already an Oscar winner for Best Director and Best Picture, the Academy has already shown its willingness to vote for her and her films. And all of that will be fresh in voters’ minds this morning as Oscar nominations voting begins.

Not that One Battle isn’t still the Goliath though. I mean every film in the race right now is an underdog in comparison, just that Hamnet may have closed the gap.
If there’s a Goliath in the Best Actress category, it’s Hamnet’s lead, Jessie Buckley. Now that I’ve seen the film, I can’t look at her face without wanting to cry again. Her face in the movie is so … open. Like you cannot believe just how f-cking transparent she is, especially in the third act, the range of emotion on display in her eyes, her nose, her lips, even her freckles seem to be radiating feelings, it’s truly astonishing what she does in this role.
Can’t say the same about her dress though, sorry. This is Dior and that’s a shock to me because that also means it’s Jonathan Anderson and it’s probably the first time I’ve called it a flop coming from him. Also Jessie’s working with Danielle Goldberg now, whose work we know from Greta Lee and Ayo Edebiri and it’s all just kinda reading so… boring? But maybe strategic, since she is the presumed Oscar best actress favourite and usually, those who are in this position play it safe on style.
Here are Jessie and Paul Mescal being adorable together backstage.
@entertainment_weekly We finally have an explanation for that water comment in JessieBuckley’s speech 😆 Her and #PaulMescal have nothing but kind things to say about each other. #Hamnet #GoldenGlobes

As for the other actresses contending for a nomination – the Screen Actors Guild may have completely snubbed Sentimental Value but as I wrote last week, Academy membership is much more internationally represented. Stellan Skarsgård won last night in the supporting category which is a boost for his campaign and I still think Renate Reinsve has a good shot at a nomination for her performance in the film.
Renate wore custom metallic Louis Vuitton, it is spectacular on her, and I love the hair choice – straight, middle part, clean, and unfussy. This is SO good.
And better, IMO, than Emma Stone’s Louis Vuitton. I like the colour and the band that you can see from the side but something about the skirt feels somehow both undercooked and overcooked. Her bob, however, is perfect right now.

So that’s two best actress contenders in LV and we’re not done. The third one is the best, by a mile.
Chase Infiniti, styled by Wayman + Micah, and holy sh-t. The structure of all that cracked mirroring on top would be enough… but then the velvet skirt underneath? They said bring the Met Gala to the Globes and SHE DID.
As for Amanda Seyfried – this is Versace, it’s lovely, but it’s also… kinda… same? Not a swing for her in the least. There’s been a lot of ruched and strapless looks for her over the last several weeks and I don’t find this recent addition to the list all that memorable. Amanda was not nominated for a SAG last week – the guild went with Kate Hudson instead (???) which means there’s some work to do on the campaign circuit if she’s to be invited to the Oscars. This may be the last time we see her on the carpet this season unless she presents.
